My 4R70W now drops out of gear pulling up to stop and won’t re-engage Drive unless I rev it with the shifter down in 1st. Once in gear it’s ok. What happened? I’m seeing a lot of forward clutch problems, any other possibilities? Never been into one of these.

Kinja'd!!!

I know the PO didn’t treat the trans well because i bought the truck with an ignored rear housing leak (just keep RTVing the shit out of the pan, that’ll fix it!), and with 145k (and, you know, Ford) I figure a rebuild is probably in order in any case

You should give it to me. I’ll have a shop here rebuild and I’ll install it and drive it around a little to make sure it’s good. I’ll give it back to you when asdhgdfdsrvtagsdfnrejljf.

Deal, assuming that asdhgdfdsrvtagsdfnrejljf is sometime before mid-July.

I hate to say it, but the forward clutch is a good guess. For me, it turned out to be several chunks of rubber missing from the forward clutch piston seal @ 178,000 miles.

I suppose you’ve already checked the fluid?

Can’t promise before then, but before the heat death of the universe?

I would tell you, but as that’s an AOD and not a Cruise O Matic, I don’t have power flow diagrams to chert from. I suspect Urambo Tauro is right, though. From what I *can* see.

I checked it before heading out yesterday, in fact. Everything I’ve read points to the FC or the piston seal as you mentioned, so thanks for confirming that. Revving it generates just enough pressure to get it into gear, apparently.

Time to swap in a 5 speed?

Well, given our summer weather that may be mid-July, so that works.

I would absolutely love to! I’ve searched high and low for manual versions for years before just grabbing this instead.

Took me a while to find mine. Unfortunately it’s kind of becoming a beater from 3 years of daily duty, home projects, and Wisconsin winters. I’m starting to get sick of things going wrong, I’m starting to look at new (to me) trucks at which point my current one will become an offroad toy/project.

That’s exactly what mine acted like. The fluid was passing right through the seal instead of pushing the piston to engage the clutch pack. It looked like this pic I found, but with more chunks missing:

Only with excessive revving was I able to get away from stop signs, and it only got worse from there. (BTW, all that revving was burning up the clutch plates, too, and probably had something to do with spinning the front retainer ring loose.) I was right on the edge of being stranded as I drove it to a friend’s place where I pulled the transmission to do my first rebuild.

I’ve got hydro diagrams on it but no power flow, that’d be helpful. Time to pull it out, it seems.

Yeah, mine has had a lot of little crap go wrong too. I rarely drive it so it’s not the end of the world, but it is annoying and I don’t really feel confident putting my family in it for trips. I refuse to own a newer Ford truck unless it’s a 7.3, so I’ve been eyeing GMT800s.

The Cruise O Matics have two clutches, two bands, and lock the clutches only to engage drive. And yet, if the rear band doesn’t hold tight enough to reach speed and keep pressure up, it can be confused as to when it’s supposed to switch out of second. Which is why you can adjust the rear band through a hole in the floor, because duh. The clutches are the same diameter, have similar numbers of plates, but have different engagement pressures and different material, so if you mix them up you’re Going To Have A Bad Time. Oh, and for ‘63 the sprag clutch for first gear changed from a tilty roller style to a rollers with follower springs style, and there was a ball valve introduced to the valve body to make it not shift into reverse with a bang, because it likes to do that.

Amazing how eerily a Borg Warner trans design assumes Ford levels of crackpipey fuckery when designed for Ford. Which is to say nothing of the linkage, particularly on one with a swing-away steering wheel. Possible problems: shifts into reverse when you swing the wheel away. EGAD. Other problems: shifts really stiff and fucky because maybe somebody forgot to remove the nylon shipping shims. Yes, that’s basically what’s listed for two problems in the troubleshooting in the shop manual - “somebody at the factory did an oops”.

I got it home yesterday by holding my foot on the throttle to keep the idle up as I slowed and stopped, once it’s in gear it’s ok. I just need to get it 12 miles to my shop to pull the trans now, if I time it well it should make it.

Haha...I’ve been looking at GMT800s too, but I want a big block, which seem decidedly difficult to find.

I also stopped and looked at a 7.3 Ford of the same vintage of my current truck, but am shying away from that as I don’t want another truck with a lot of little things going wrong on it

*crosses fingers* Good luck! Definitely not a trip you want to make during rush hour haha.

Is a rebuild something you’d be game to take on yourself? I was a newbie at it, but I found some good info that walked me through the entire process. I can send some of that stuff your way if you’re interested.

I’d be happy to do it myself here at the shop, even though I haven’t been into an automatic beyond the valve body in years, but I just don’t have the time between running the place and parenthood. Plus I’ve got some current home improvement projects and a trip in July that I need it for. I’ll probably do the R&I, then take it to the rebuilder down the road that other shops have recommended. If I was 25 I’d have had it blown apart yesterday!

Haha, yeah I hear ya there. BTW, if your transmission hasn’t had it done yet, ask your rebuilder to do the J-mod. I think you’ll like it.
