So much this. A person once told me they were originally for cargo loading so you wouldn’t have wheel well intrusion causing havoc with the weight & balance of your load (in the olden days). Then they just became a style thing.

I think step sides are actually pretty cool! I’m a little biased though seeing as I’ve been daily driving one for a decade now...I’m actually in the process of turning it into a sort of all purpose race truck because...why not? This isn’t a youtube plug on purpose but here it is-

I bought it my senior year of high school with 33,000 miles on it from my grand father and now, 207,000 miles later I’m trying to revive it.
Also back to the original topic- I’m not against bed toppers, it would make long road trips easier but they’re so hard to find for this generation!

If they actually matched the contours of the bed without doing that weird angle right before the cab I think they’d look a lot better.

It’s especially weird that they swoop out right where the bed swoops in
