About the Nissan Juke.

So as some of you know I work at a gas station. The other day a customer came in to exchange two 20 pound propane cylinders. Now most in cars, SUVs, Hatchbacks, even sedans you can easily stand up a 20 pounder in the cargo area. Not in the Juke, as I helped him load the new tanks into his car he laid them flat. Why? Because there wasn’t enough room between the rear seats and rear glass to stand them up. If you’re not familiar with these BBQ grill tanks here’s a diagram.

Kinja'd!!!

So the tank is about 1 foot wide, and 1.5 feet tall. And the Juke could not accommodate an item this small. Not only that but laid down they took up all of the “load floor” behind the seats. I’ve said before that my disdain for the Juke was caused by its tiny cargo area, and this experience reaffirmed my rage. Why have a crossover that can’t haul 4 people and a weekends worth of luggage, at hell my little hatchback can do that.

The real problem is the lack of a charcoal grill.

I like to say it’s a crossover that drives like a hatchback, but has the cargo capacity of a coupe.

I want a Hatchback, that drives like a coupe, with the cargo capacity of a Crossover.

The Fit almost does it.

That’s disappointing. Sure, every cargo area will fall short of *something*, but if sportscars are measured by their ability to carry golf equipment, surely a SUV/crossover should be able to handle a small propane tank.

Based on that experience I think two golf bags would be a tight fit in the Juke.

Well, since the beginning the Juke has been possibly the least efficient use of space among all small cars. I think people buying it already know that. It ’ s just a lifted Versa with less space and a better engine. And 12 extra headlights.

My A3 sportback is more or less a hatchback that drives like a coupe but has only about 20 cu ft cargo area, the Fit is amazing in the way Honda designed the rear seats. The Fit has about 17 cu ft normally but can be configured to about 52 cu ft which is enormous. My wife’s Ford Edge has 32 cu ft normally and seats down goes to 69 cu ft. The fact that the Fit cargo area falls between these numbers is amazing considering the size of the car.

Same thing with my Mazda5, but I rarely use the third row so the cargo area remains a decent size.

Yeah the Fit almost cheats with its low floor, and tall roof. Not being AWD, and having small tires arealso a huge advantages in the cargo department.  It’s really more of a small van than a hatchback, but boy does my wife hate when I say that.

One of my daughter’s friends has a Fit and loves it. The girl bought it as her first new car with a real job after college. She just got married and has used it for moving a lot of things. It has a lot of utility built in, but don’t say that to your wife.

I just have two requirements that I like to have in my life, 1. sporty and 2. practical and off-road capable(proper 4WD, with a transfer case and low gears). Preferably the sporty one is also capable enough to be my main driver. Which I think I have covered pretty much as well as I could for my low budget with the 318ti and a 2nd-gen 4Runner. Except I can only have one car at college so the 4Runner gets to be my do-everything

As a juke owner... I don’t care. I didn’t buy it to haul stuff, and if cargo space is your concern.... Buy an SUV.

How do I cope with a small cargo space? I went out and picked up a cheap Volvo wagon. Problem solved. And yes, that is not a practical fix for most people, but like I said.... Those people should just buy a larger vehicle. That is the whole point in test driving a car before you buy it, to get one that fits your needs.

Also the Juke is not really the crossover for 4 people and their weekend luggage. The Rogue is the one which does that. But you forgo the fun.
