Okay, not so much, but the inability to do something as fundamental as change a tire, and the resulting emasculation (ladies, you should know how to change tires too. This ad was all-boy) is sad.

Liberty Stands With You. You, the coddled boy-babies whose terrible parents probably can’t change a tire themselves.

These kid’s parents are probably the same people who take their car to the dealer when the low tire light comes on. Changing a tire should be something taught to everyone in driver’s ed or in some sort of class.

Not being able to change a tire is pretty pathetic.

When I was in college I was walking back from a 4000 level ChemE class with 2 friends. An E46 M3 drove by and me and one of my friends started ogling over the car. The girl who was with us was like what’s so special about that. I proceed to tell inform and mention something about the engine. I’m sure it was something along the lines of it’s a 3.2L I6 with 333hp, to which she responds I don’t even know how many cylinders my own car has. She follows that up with, I may not know how many cylinders my car has but I know how to change a tire and how to check my oil.

When my wife started driving she went about 10,000 miles without an oil change, because she didn’t know that was a thing you had to do.

To be fair torque ratios are actually a thing, it’s the ratio of input torque to output torque, which conveniently (and logically) is equal in number to the gear ratio.

It is a thing, but isn’t something people look at while researching cars.

I like cars and I don’t know how to change a tire or check my oil. I couldn’t even pump a tire on my own. 100% serious.

no, no, no - it’s a great ad - it makes his dumb a$$edness acceptable because his mother says it’s ok. And she’s paying for his car, insurance, cell phone, etc...

Agreed that the actors featured are extreme weeinies / momma’s boys who should understand how to change a tire. Whoever the “dad” is that they called failed them as a dad by not teaching this.

However, I’m personally uncertain if I could change a roadside flat on my truck. This is partly because the wheels are stupid heavy.  Plus, the lug wrench in the truck is the equivalent of “pushing rope” against to the 200 lb-ft impact wrench that was probably used to install the lug nuts last time they were rotated. This doesn’t create a favorable outcome.

Fixed his flat tire?

They actually pulled the nail, separated the wheel and tire, buffed out the area, added some patch compound, applied the patch, rolled it out, re installed the tire, filled it with air, balanced it, reinstalled to all on a roadside visit?

IMHO, if it has a spare, you should be able to change it.

Do not return here until you learn how to do these basic things. You don’t even need to know how to drive manual to do these things.

What size tires? I’ve changed them on full-size pickups and cargo vans before, all with stock tires. The tires were definitely heavy, but I was still able to do it by myself each time. Admittedly though, I’d rather every tire change was like my last one (on a Nissan Versa Note).

275/70-18. TireRack says that the tires alone are ~50 lbs, add another 30 or so for the wheel by my estimation.

Yep. All of mine are similar but a little smaller, 16 & 17 wheel sizes. They’re a bitch to get on and off the hub but it’s doable. If you have roadside assistance, I say make them earn their pay.

I did, and it seems you’re the one referring to “emasculation.” Whether you also think women should know how to change tires has nothing to do with that comment.

Yes, because the same ad with young women in place of the young men would have been posted on Jezebel, and likely ripped by people such as yourself, for reinforcing stereotypes.

And here I am anyway getting ripped on for pointing out that men are also subjected to shitty stereotypes and expectations regarding masculinity. JFC you’re so close and just not getting it.

I’m not sure what stereotype you’re pointing out, when I’ve already pointed it out. Or that you’re getting “ripped for pointing it out”. Had the ad featured young women, they certainly wouldn’t have been emasculated for not being able to change a tire. In fact, it is expected by our society that they don’t know how to do such things, because girls.

There is some other word for that, but I can’t quite think of what it is...

How exactly is it emasculating to not change a tire? It has nothing to do with girls or women and I’m really not sure why you keep bringing that up as if it somehow absolves you from conflating tire changing and masculinity.

The comment on the commercial is based on the commercial. You are the one who is trying to paint my point as conflation. The young men are presented as not being capable of performing a simple manual task. One is standing next to his mother, all “aw shucks” with his hands in his pocket, while the other is questioned about his knowledge of something as simple as what a lug wrench is, and getting it wrong.

These are examples of emasculation. I find it sad that is just assumed at this point that it is just understood that - in this case - young men aren’t taught or expected to know how to perform as simple a task as changing a tire, so that you need roadside assistance to pay to call in someone who does...

Kinja'd!!! "Just wear your damn mask..." (jimal)
05/01/2017 at 13:32, STARS: 0

The emasculation is not the inability to change the tire. The emasculation is how they are presented.

Regardless of how much you can hoist, you’re gonna have a bad time trying to fight against over-tightened lug nuts with one of these. Leverage and such.
