Not every new car needs LEDs

So I have been thinking about something recently. Almost every new car seems to offer LED running lights either standard or as an optional extra. Now I don’t think every car is styled to have them. There are a number of cars that it seems like they put them there just to be like “ Oh it looks like an 8 year old audi now”. Now don’t get me wrong, on some cars it looks spectacular and really heightens the appeal, but some cars I just think its there for no reason. Cars can look modern without tacking on LEDs to the headlights.

My example is the Pilot, don’t think it needs it

Clarkson once described an Audi as looking like it was wearing Dame Edna Everidge’s spectacles.

They use LEDs partially because of CO2 - they consume less electricity so less load on the engine.

Or, modern cars can ditch traditional headlight design altogether because LEDs don’t need acres of plastic housing.

I like the old school DRLs on my 4th gen Outback. Best part is they don’t turn off when using the turn signals!

Led running lights are definitely hit or miss. That said more cars need led headlights.

Do Honda’s really shutoff the alternator intermittently to save fuel?

No. LEDs are more efficient than traditional headlights.

Don’t know, but there’s far more than you ever wanted to know about LEDs and CO2 here

I get that but this is LER running lights not headlights. I am all for LEDs for lighting visibility and efficiency, I am talking about in a sense of styling the car

Yeah I get that but I’m not talking about the headlights, I am all for LED headlights for visibility and efficiency, I just hate some of the styling, it looks like an afterthought on the LED running lights

It should be an option only not standard for daytime running lights for all vehicles. Where I live there is no fog or some other thing that warrants car lights to be on in broad daylight. (the brightness of the huge SUN that lights up half a planet & can raise temperatures to 90 degrees isn’t enough?)

Idk, whenever I see them on I just think the person doesn’t understand how to work their car. LED’s may be more efficient, but its still inefficient to have them on when they aren’t needed.

(for the record my old *** car does not have daytime running lights so I realize I may have some confusion bias somewhere)

agree - I could live without all the swoopy LED lighting. But that said, I do think LEDs make excellent DRLs - longer lasting and more effective/visable than a traditional halogen or incandescent.

I disagree, signature LED running lamps are one of the few modern car traits I like. However I do think they should be model specific rather than the more common brand identifier.

They are just so fucking bright, there really needs to be a national brightness regulation, and if there is it is not low enough! You get a face full of Q7 and wow it’s a lot. I do like some LEDs for daytime running lights, gives you some visibility and isn’t intrusive.

Well my problem is that there are some cars that the decided to add the DRL to half way through a generation which in my opinion looks bad, when the car is designed that way from the beginning its not so bad. For instance my passat has LED drls and I love them and I think they fit the look of the car. Today on my way to my parents house I saw a Nissan Rouge with DRLs that looked like crap. White/blueish LEDs with regular soft white bulbs

The worst offender for that was the 2013 200C They look exactly like some eBay garbage a 17 year old would glue onto his headlights. Even in this press photos you can see how blue they are.
