we needed something with more power and weight to pull a round baler with... Craigslist came through! We now own a 1985 Zetor 5211. Unknown hours, needs brake master cylinders, a new fuel shut-off solenoid, a front axle pivot rebuild, and some electrical work. But the engine and mechanicals are strong, it runs really well, has good tires

and it was cheap. Really cheap! $2200 cheap. For a 50HP, 6000lb small field tractor..

Sounds like a deal - I know nothing about farming whatsoever, nor farming equipment, but I know it’s not cheap stuff!

Wow, I had no idea Zetors existed in the US.

Yeah, a really good deal. It was less than 1/2 the price of the 40-50 year-old Internationals and Massey Fergusons we thought we were going to get in our budget. It’s not even really in that bad shape, it’s been serviced regularly by the previous owner and had new brakes (but not master cylinders) and clutch two years ago. It has worked hard for it’s living, but it has also been relied on, so it got needed maintenance. Most of the ~$5000 Internationals and MFs we’d been looking at had been parked in the back of a shed (or outside under a tree) for the last 15-20 years because they were replaced by something newer. “ran when parked” sort of deals. This thing fired right up, has a newish battery, and isn’t even rusty, as it’s been garage kept. Those Zetors are not fancy, but they are rugged and reliable. I am pleased with this purchase.

lets see, at the stated top speed of 24KPH... it should be able to manage just under an hour! About 52 minutes, actually.

Yup, they certainly aren’t as popular here as they are Europe, but they’re here. We even still have an active Zetor dealer in Vermont. They’re a little rough and unrefined, but they’re tough and reliable, Vermont farmers can appreciate that.

Never heard of Zetor, but that sounds like a damn good buy to me. I dig the orange.

interesting history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zetor

yeah, I think it’s very good deal. even with the minor work it needs, it’s a lot of tractor for that money.

Czech and from 1985. You’ve got yourself a communist vehicle there!

Wow! It’s a commie tractor!

That is some really interesting history. They’ve had some serious innovation over the years. One usually doesn’t associate innovation and communism together.

Very cool piece you’ve got there.

Nice. The Valtra A series and the Claas baler in the background are very familiar.

The former GDR had great engineers who sadly couldn’t really develop what they wanted due to lack of currensy and supplies dictated by party functionaries. Plus the dumbass planned economy which has never worked as intended and never will.

You got a better tractor for cheaper than a Ford 9N. I’ll call that a good buy anyway considering it’s hard to get a yard tractor for that price anymore.

Without a doubt, technical knowledge was not lacking. The fact that Zetor’s engineers were able to innovate in communist economic conditions, is a testament to how talented they must have been.

sadly, both of those are far outside our budget. The picture is not actually the tractor we bought, I forgot to take a picture, but we looked at a dealer used lot too.
