XC70, Anyone?

It’s big, brutish, and fits none of my criteria, but this ‘12 Volvo XC70 will make my parents very, very happy.

The question, though, is will it satisfy me? This car has a Polestar badge which would imply a tune as no one outside of our silly little community would know/care otherwise. It is an AWD T6 which is power enough (maybe too much) to take me a little ways off pavement. My main concern is that it is simply massive, although perhaps in Tucson that isn’t so much an issue as a plus since it means more room for passengers and possible dive gear as the Mexican coast is apparently a popular destination. Does anyone have any experience with these newer SI6's? Any issues? Modular engines are pretty stout, so perhaps any complaints with the Haldex system (other than not having traction?) As with my college decision, this may turn out to be the compromise that makes everyone happy, although I won’t realize it until the end. Good night, Oppo.

My SI6 is the NA 3.2L version. Smooth power, bulletproof reliability. The T6 variant is powerful enough on its own w/o the Polestar software...so the grunt, combined with how good XC70s (and other practical Volvos) generally are, means you won’t be too choked about not having a manual.

Just know these cars are made for comfort/off-roading, not apex-carving. There’s also lots of space back there. If you’re cool with that, you’ll like it.

Gotcha. Appreciate the advice, I guess for me the Polestar   is a bit of a badge thing since it’s not my $1.2K if the PO really did pay for it and the 25+ hp bump is negligible. I’m not broken up about not having a stick at this point, I basically made a pact with myself that I’d either go stick or stay Volvo and so it’s fine by me.

That’s probably exactly what I’m looking for. The road up Mt. Lemmon looks (on Google Maps) to be a fun canyon carver so I’m a bit broken up about that, but I probably won’t care once I take a few long road trips and realize that this is probably the best car in the long run given the area.

I have no experience with these except for deciding that one would be first “practical” car. Do it, go out and recreate this photo

Disclaimer: probably don’t actually do that, though.

Dude, college in the middle of the desert with a 325 hp AWD wagon? How could we not try that!?

From my knowledge, Volvos have small backseats, so if you’re carrying people around, a small CUV* would be a better bet.

*I have a RAV4, which CR said has a roomy rear seat. Sitting behind my seat, which is all the way lowered and all the way back, I have little legroom. You are probably smaller than me, so you won’t have this issue for passengers.

Well, you’d probably destroy the suspension instantly for one.

Can I have it? I’m looking for that exact car right now and it’s a pita to find

We looked at several XC70 T6s (with and without Polestar tune) and they are fantastic cars. As long as you don’t plan on talking anything too crazy, they should be able to get you out there a little bit, and they are exceptionally easy to drive.

I have a V50. An XC70 would undoubtedly be an upgrade from that for sure.

My dad is excited, really excited since this is the only AWD XC70 for like a 200 mile radius; he wasn’t going to buy any car until his company’s stock comes in two weeks from now, but this has him ready to figure out some way to pick it up in the meantime...we’ll see how this one goes down...

Yep. Considering Arizona, it’ll probably be a roadtrip warrior both down to Mexico and across to San Diego every time a break rolls around, so the long-distance cruising nature of the big estate should come in handy then. (And at least it has an AUX jack, not like my V50...)

Not only is the space great for road trips, but the XC70 is absurdly comfortable.

Fingers crossed, for now. Hope you can find one nearby. I initially wanted a 9-3X but those are even rarer.

I guess I’ll have to get my first Saab sometime later—if any are left :(

Hopefully true. The seats are impeccable, because Vo, but the suspension better not be anything like that of my dad’s V70 which enjoys crashing over each and every single damned bump on the road.

Nope, not like that at all. Tall and springy.
