Kinja'd!!!

Should I install top of the line coilovers, or sell them and focus on different mods for now?

I could put my Xida coilovers on, but at minimum that would lower my car an inch and a half, probably more. I’m already on the edge as far as ground clearance goes for offroad dirt shenanigans... And I really don’t want to be limited to just street stuff. Running up and down mountains is free, track days aren’t. I could sell the Xidas and free up a ton of cash for various other projects... But I saved up quite a while for these, after lusting over them for years. I consider them the pinnacle of Miata suspension design, I’d be heartbroken to see them go.

Pros for putting on the Miata:

Already have them at home

High speed cornering confidence would shoot up exponentially

They’re freakin’ Xidas

One of my shocks is blown (and has been since purchasing the car, probably)

Much more comfortable than stock.

No more body roll

Duel springs, bullet coaxial mounts so I’d be covered under all driving conditions

They’re freakin’ Xidas!

My car would finally fit under most gates

Cons:

I own zero power tools, so I’d either have to buy stuff, pay a shop, or deal with high torque rusty suspension bolts using 3/8 sockets.... Yeah no.

Ground clearance. I wouldn’t be slammed, but I’d still scrape a lot of things. Like leaves, and O2 molecules

No more offroading without greatly increasing risks of damage. Might be able to counteract this with a thin steel underbody sheet??

Pros for selling:

Resale value is insane. These are the Toyota Tacoma of aftermarket Miata parts. Xidas with 30,000 miles easily fetch 70-80% of what they sold for. Mine are mint, zero wear, with all upgrades offered from 949 racing.

If I sell, I could buy a Craigslist kawasaki 250 or similar and finally start riding. Or a scooter + mods. This would be especially nice because I’d have another vehicle if the Miata was undergoing any big projects.

Or, I could buy a professionally built 1.8 off of someone on the Miata forums. Finally get some more power.... And keep it NA for reliability and responsiveness.

Or or, save up a few more weeks and pick up trackspeed engineering’s lust worthy turbo kit...

I’m conflicted. I’ll probably just hold on to them for awhile haha

Sell them, buy replacement shocks, and start plans on sourcing of a NB motor for more NA goodness? NA block + NB1 head = fun. NB motor + JDM box intake = stupid fun.

What is this jdm box intake you speak of?

And I know it could be considered blasphemous, but I’ve considered having a company in California do a semi high-end stereo system for the suspension moneyz. I’ve heard a Miata with their setup, and it was incredible

Non-USDM NB Miatas got a boxy intake manifold that helped give their engines better breathing at higher rpm along with 5 more hp. A major difference is that the box intakes have a straighter path from the throttle body to the runners than the US-spec.

JDM intakes do not have EGR ports but the European-spec ones do if you want to stay somewhat emissions-friendly! You can buy a non-USDM intake for anywhere between 300$ to 500$ depending on the seller. Mazdaspeed will sell you a new one for around 550$ but I’m not sure if that comes with gaskets.

Also, try finding a NB2 exhaust manifold! They’re lighter and flow better because of their tubular design!

Sell the coils and get a pair of shocks and springs to take care of any suspension needs. Sounds like you need a set of Flyin Miata Springs (easy to find used), FatCat Motorsports bumpstops (expensive but worth it), NB Tophats (easy to find used), and a set of one of many, MANY available cheap(ish) quality(ish) shocks- used or new- I run KYB AGX and FM Springs and I get about a 1.5"-2" drop.

That should leave you with a proper suspension setup (my sway bars are rusted into oblivion and it doesn’t mind me, don’t mess with those just yet) and cash to spare on more shenanigans.

I put the best springs and shocks I could without going to coilovers on my 240Z, because you have to cut the old cars to do it. It is pretty nice now, I did eibach springs and Tokico shocks. I would move on to other things.

Install the Xidas along with a lift kit. Best of both worlds. It spaces the bottom of the shock up from the control arm so it doesn’t affect travel or anything.

Or send me the Xidas so I can do tracky things with my NB2.

I think I would sell that fancy shit and just buy new struts. Spend the rest on horsepower or bicycles.

Wait... which one in that picture is the JDM intake? The installed one or the not-installed one? Fairly moot point for us VTCS-having NB2 owners with our weird intake nonsense.

The not-installed one. I know there’re ways to disable the VTCS junk and run the EUDM-spec unit, I don’t remember how.

That sounds perfect... You get the gold star, I’m adding this to the summer list  http://pacomotorsports.com/lift-kit/

I told myself I’d save power until every last other system had been addressed and upgraded..... But I’m craving hp

I’ve seen lift kits, but not much in the way of offroad Miata suspension... I’ll research more tonight though!

It’s super easy to install and remove as well, so you can have a track weapon or a climb-every-mountain machine (uncomfortably probably, given the high spring rates of the Xidas)

One of the things in my engine either the VTCS or VVT is SUPER noticeable for the first five minutes after starting the engine. Keep the throttle at 40% and then right at 3400rpm the car will suddenly take off. Bizarre.

I’ll rig up some seat suspension if it’s too bumpy haha

I’m trying to build it into an adventure rig, that can handle a little bit of everything. Doesn’t need scalpel like precision in any one category
