Anyone try lithium car batteries before?

I have two Optimas in two vehicles and the drawback to those is you can’t jump them if you fuck up, you have to run them through a cycle on their charger. That is Pete Brock, I saw this on the BRE site where I get Z stuff sometimes.

I have braille in my car. To be honest, I think it puts a little extra stress on the alternator. I should have bought a bigger capacity. Make sure you don’t skimp on that. The loss of weight however, is excellent.

Oh, and if you get an undersized battery, make sure you get a bracket that will hold it down. I’ve got mine fairly jerryrigged.

Why exactly do you say you cant jump start an AGM battery? Optima has a “how to jump start” page right on their site. It would be silly to have that if you couldn’t actually jump an Optima.

Lithium batteries do NOT like cold weather. It would die overnight on the first chilly winter day.

McLaren uses them, and I think Porsche offers them as an option on their track-day specials.

How do their battery sizes work? They don’t seem to match up with regular sizes.

Optima told me not to jump it, to take the battery and charge it overnight on their unit. They said if you have to, you hook another battery up to it and leave it for a little bit before you do. I did that and jumped it, drove it and it read all good, but they are known for being dead the next day if it was too low for that procedure. Mine was never good again and they gave me a free one. I live in SF/marin, no snow so it might be ok.

Well my 240Z isn’t a DD, so I could take the battery home with me when I don’t drive it even, we could make a cradle for it, my friend has everything. I have an Optima now.

I’ve looked into alternative batteries for capacity but I think the charging requires of lithium don’t make a lot of sense for my alternator. Would be cool to get a redarc or C-tek charger and use a lithium as a house battery though, I could even put it inside in the back.

EDIT: just looked up the price of what a big enough battery would cost. NOPE!

Yeah, they don’t really match up with anything as far as I can tell. The one I have is the quarter of the size of a normal battery. I had to scrap the little plastic terminal covers and get an aftermarket battery bracket on amazon. It’s still not perfect, but it works.

If you’re comfortable getting a little dirty on a battery, go for it.

For a race car sure. For a consumer car nope.

Lithium batteries especially don’t like the cold. Catch on fire if over/under charged or overheated.

For an EV designed to use a lithium battery they do so only for weight and charge density/discharge rate. To replace a standard lead acid battery on a standard car only adds fire risk and high cost.

Even Prius’ use lead acid batteries for the 12V system.
