You’re on a car search (for a particular car), and you’re looking and looking though all of the bullshit. You’re about to give up as you can’t believe how hard it is to find a car you want. Then you see one that ticks all the boxes! Even though you haven’t even contacted the dealer/seller to see if it’s available, you’ve now pictured your whole life together. You think of the things you will get for it, and the adventures you’ll go on with it etc...

Kinja'd!!!

Well that’s what I’m doing, just setting myself up for disappointment over a rinky dink Ford Ranger.

I really have no rush to get one, but I decided recently that I need a small pickup. Now I’ve found this and thought about owning it for 20 minutes, so I must have it!

EDIT: Annnnnnnnnd it’s a fuckin’ salvage title! God damn it! I knew it was too good.

Which engine? Also, Rangers are fun, I already upgrades pop’s with a set of nerf bars and I’m semi-actively searching for a cheap set of ‘05+ turn signals and rear tail lights.

Yes. Cars... and women whom I’ve met; mutually believing we have a future together... only for things not to work out some time later.

Haha I spent years scouting the E46. The E90 fell into my lap. I started a new job the previous week, and that weekend an E90 M3 popped up on my saved search on autotrader, I rolled out of bed put on slippers and bought it haha.

I thought this ranger thing would be easy seeing as how there are far more Ford rangers in existence than any of the cars I’m normally after. There are a lot of rangers alright, a lot of fuckin beat rangers...

Small pickup as DD? Or small pickup for occasional small pickup stuff?

heyyyy Ranger bro! just bought mine yesterday. ‘08 with the 2.3. Bare bones stock, crank windows and plastic everything. I was in the exact mindset you were when this one fell in my lap.

Been there done that. It’s even worse when you know you can actually buy a car. Usually it’s just widow shopping and day dreaming.

Yes. Way too many times- and it usually led to a car that wasn’t what I thought it would be.

My brother used to own a Ranger - 2wd, v6, 5 speed. It was a hoot to drive. Good luck!

A little of both. I’m going to sell the Audi in a year or two when it gets to the age mileage where I think I might be able to sell it privately. So I want the pickup because I’m doing enough stuff to the house to warrant it, and I want to be able to tote the Grom and maybe a dirt bike.

If ive already got the truck there’s less chance that I will just go out and waste money on another car that I will only keep a few years. I should have stopped with the E46.

Yea I’ve seen a bunch of rangers I can’t or don’t want to afford. Now that there’s one that I can I’m hot for it

Yes I do that all the time even when I’m not in any position to make a purchase. It’s like my primary OCD outlet. I’ve been making mod lists for cars I’ve never bought since sometime in the mid 90s. I’ve never been inspired to do so for a rinky dink Ford Ranger.

Yea I feel that way about every car except the E46. Not what I thought it would be, or it didn’t ingite the feelings that I thought it would.

I had an 87 ranger that my wife and I loved. It was such a fun bouncy POS. I’m trying to get that back minus the POS

same, it’s not until I got the Grom that I had any interest in any vehicles besides Small fast German cars. So I’ve done the mod list with fancy cars a million times. Now I’m like. Acquire ranger, build garage, migrate E46, buy dirtbike.. profit?

Yeah it’s my E46 that’s the exception too, of course.

My brothers was a 93. Long bed, standard cab, bouncy- but reliable considering he beat the crap out of it, and the manual wasn’t bad by truck standards. There’s something just comfortable about driving a well worn pickup truck.

I just discovered through a free VIN check that it’s a salvage title. So pissed. I should have known, the “dealer” had 3 cars in their inventory.

Sounds to me like you need a Vulcan V6 2004 Ranger Edge SuperCab with the 5 speed manual in your life.

Almost 13 years and 215k miles after we bought it brand new, my dad traded it in for a 2016 F150 XLT Sport 2.7 EcoBoost recently. We hold it as the gold standard in our household with regards to cars.

I still hold it as my favorite and the best car of all time. Always have and always will.

When I find it, I will buy it and bring it back to its former glory.

Nice! I had my 96 Mazda B2300 sent off to the junk yard last year after the bottom of it rusted out. The brake lines rusted out while my wife and I were pulling up to a stop sign. Thankfully no one was in the intersection as we did a gangster roll through the stop. I could have fixed all the rusty brake lines, but frankly the rest of the suspension and frame was also getting dangerously rusty and I was afraid it might break in half while driving it down the highway. It was a sad day when it went to junk yard. It was like yours; basic. Crank windows, 2.3 four banger, manual trans. But it was a God-honest truck.

I need another one. Off to autotrader!

One almost fell into my lap, but I couldn’t afford it at the time. When I was seriously in the market, it was hard for me to find one that met all my criteria.

I feel like there are two reasons that people buy rangers. First is you can’t afford an F150; second is that you want a beater truck. (There are other reasons, but it seems like these are the two main reasons.) As a result they seem to get abused. My high school friend had one as his first vehicle and he beat the shit out of it. I will say it took the beating with fly colors. It met its demise in an interstate wreck.

That sucks. At least you did your homework up front and found out before you test drove it. Would have been even more painful then.

Also, a “dealer” with 3 cars? WTH? Sounds like a glorified curbstoner.

However, the Subaru dealer where we bought my wife’s Forester has got an 08 4.0V6 manual. I’m headed out to look now. It’s a little more than I want to spend, so well see...

Couldn’t make a deal. Sticker was 13800, after I drove it I decided that I wouldn’t go more than 12, and would really only be comfortable around 11...

I’m glad I walked though. I didn’t really like how it drove, it was weird. I wanted to like it, but it was just not as fun to drive and the piece of shit 1987 ranger I had previously.

So now I’m looking older and cheaper.

If it looks to be in good condition, I would just go for it even with the salvage title. Maybe get an insurance quote beforehand if that eases your conscience. It’s often not as terrible an idea as many would have you believe.
