I want to paint my van that Corsair color of blue, same sheen level, with the grill and bumper using the gray from underneath. Adjusted for film color. I think the color spec is ANA608 Intermediate Blue. Sandblast it to bare metal, apply epoxy primer, and then spray it just like it is.

You really don’t want to sandblast sheetmetal but the idea is good. If you’re serious, look into the services where they come to you and sodablast. Might be what you’re looking for if you can find what I’m talking about.

I don’t think many people offer actual sand blasting anymore. It’s kind of a generic term for people not directly in the industry.

Love it. It’ll make you think of a plane if you add a bit more to it, though. I wonder if there’s a more original way to accentuate the panel gaps other than to use the classic rivets. Maybe weather the very edge of every panel.

Noted, but in this case, I am talking about actual 100-grit sand being sent forth by pressurized air.

Is that for fear of making a hole in the metal?

I wouldn’t take it that far, but it’s a good thought. Just the color and sheen would be sufficient for my needs.

Those are some beauties. I’ve always been fond of the S2.

They do, a lot of resto shops still use sand and walnut shells. Soda is a preference. Some like it because it’s not as aggressive but others won’t touch it- since it can lead to paint adherence issues if it’s not neutralized properly and it won’t get rust pits very well.

Kind of like the “body filler under or over epoxy” argument.

You can permanently damage panels with sand if you aren’t careful.

Are you doing the painting yourself? Chemical stripper might be your best bet to get most of the old paint off, then break out the DA sander to dress the metal to 80, 180, or whatever the epoxy tech sheet says.

Oh, then I decided would not recommend that. The chance of warping is too high.

I second this one. Plus there is something oddly satisfying about the look of it when the stripper is doing its job(teehee).

Why would you put Army Air Corps on something done to look like a Navy/Marine Corsair?

You will, of course, then be required to put your name and rank on the door.

Well, I certainly won’t be smoothing anything out. Just knocking out the rust and painting it.

I was at a show at NAS Fort Worth a few years ago when those anniversary liveries were out. I saw the Prowler. It looked so good. I’ll have to check my pics for others.

It’s a lot of friction and a lot of force overall; for sheetmetal you want to stick with sodablasting, it’s slower but gentle enough to not wreck the steel
