Will it swallow?

Kinja'd!!!

Well yes, my 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI is able to swallow the courtesy car bicycle just fine. Well, partially. Despite being barely longer (but narrower) than a modern Fiat 500.

Because I suddenly decided this week I was going to take a full time 2-month German language course 900 km away, starting next Wednesday, I had to get 2 cars inspected in advance. The GTI because its inspection will run out in about a month, when I’m away. My DD because only a novice (me) works on it and it’s a 17 year old Italian built French car with 299k on the odometer and I want to be confident it’s in decent condition when abroad and for the Oppo Alps meet/cruise in June. It turned out all it needed was 0.25L of coolant, a bulb and a mounting rubber for the exhaust. Peugeot 406 coupe for life I guess, it never goes wrong.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Back to the bike and GTI. Because I thought it was silly to lend 2 courtesy bikes to get home after handing in 2 cars I solved that issue with throwing the bike in the back of the GTI. The bike is rather massive and the car is tiny, but it worked just fine. I only needed to drive a few kilometers anyway.

That little Poo-joe looks like a bundle of fun.

It is. Loads of fun. Best hot hatch of the 1980s.

They have cars too. Citroën Xsaras and C3s (mk1). I opted for a bike, because why not?

I wrote a review about one of their loaner cars a few years back. I just checked the plates and its inspection expired last February :(

An African or European swallow?

African. Look at that bike. It could be carried by an African swallow but not a European swallow.

I’ve just looked it up, and it would seem that they claimed 20 cubic feet as a cargo volume/42 cubic feet with the seats down. My “land barge” 1963 Galaxie has a 30 cubic foot trunk, so the Pug compares quite favorably to a sedan from a pure gear-hauling basis - though that number in the Galaxie is with a surprisingly small 1 foot depth and would be nearly doubled by having the lid up.

Well yes, but you could fit the whole 205 in that Galaxie had it been a wagon. How would a Toyota Echo carry a load like that? The Echo is a longer and wider car.

Quite. If one is to have a sedan, one might as well get one big enough for the job, and flaunt it. Clearly.

That basket on the bicycle made me chuckle. I bet that Polo could swallow a bike too in the steilheck.

The ‘coupe’ could too I bet. They’re about similar in size as the 205; direct competitors. That red Polo YOU ARE GOING TO BUY was from 1988 as well, right?

It’s perfect. I talked long with my parents though and I will probably not buy it. The current situation that I’m in doesn’t really allow that fiancial burden right now for me. During summer I will probably buy a car.

I see the insurance as the biggest financial hurdle. Is there a way for you to get classic car insurance? If so, find out what kind of use and car age limitations such an insurance would have. If the car has to be 25+ years old or so there are a few options that would be inexpensive and fun, like that Polo. Or an Audi 80. Or, you know, a 205 ;)

I’ve got my 205s insured for €5 a month a car, as classics. They don’t even look at my age or history although they do note that the cars can’t be used for commuting.

That plus I could get points from my parents’ contract and they also still got points left from my late grandfather. I turn 21 in July so that will help too.

I know what you need: a 205 Terberg

I’m sure the bicycle would fit without a problem (or not, seeing it’s nothing longer than yours)

You don’t see those around any more. Or any kind of car to van conversions really.

It seems almost all of them vanished the moment they changed the tax rules for privately owned ‘grijs kenteken’ cars sometime in the early 00s (which I only remember because my grandpa had a Peugeot Partner, and sold it because it no longer had any tax benefits).
