I’ve started planning for Drive-cation 2017 , and my preliminary route would add two states (KS and OK) to my life list of states that I’ve visited (32 so far). So, which states have you been to, Oppo? Whether you drove in them, had a stopover on an airline, set one foot in, whatever, fill out this map and then post your results in this thread. Sorry, flyover states don’t count.

Update : I had to update my map, 1) to remove NV—I thought I had been there but I hadn’t; 2) to add the rest of the northeast states. My father, aside from being an inveterate traveler, is also obsessed with keeping lists of his travels and making sure he has been to every state in his lifetime (he has). He counts license plates daily and keeps a total in his head of the states he’s seen. When we took a month-long driving vacation to the Canadian Atlantic Provinces, we left VA and he made a point of making sure that we at least touched RI and CT so he could check them off his list. We also hit NH on that trip.

You do have to specify what constitutes a visit. My wife is a stickler on this one; You have to have done something in that state other than is incidental to passing through (gas, eating, driving through etc)

I can’t, because Kinja hates me. But 46 states - and I think 44 by HammerheadFistpunch’s rules. Missing the Dakotas, Montana, New Mexico — all of which have a LOT to see. NH/RI have only been fly in/drive out for me.

Image uploading is still broken for me on my iPhone and Mac, so I’ll just summarize:

7 states, plus D.C., if a layover in O’Hare counts as visiting Illinois, otherwise I’ve never been west of D.C. (NY, NJ, PA, MA, MD, DE, DC, IL).

Ironically, I’ve been to 15 or so countries including the US, so I’ve actually visited more countries than U.S. states.

Even by Hammerhead’s rules, I think I’ve done something significant in every state I colored in, with the possible exception of NV, which I drove across on my way from San Diego to the Grand Canyon. Actually, now that I’ve checked, I have to take NV off my list.

I can’t make the image upload work for some reason (damn you, Kinja) but I’ve been to 39: all but Maine, West Virginia, Iowa, North Dakota, Louisiana, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Alaska. Of those 11, I’ve missed opportunities (professional or recreational) to go to four in the past year alone, and I’ve been within a few miles of three others without actually crossing the border. I’ll probably knock two off in the next year.

Where in the world does one fly that to that requires a layover in Maine? (Note: I’ve had one in Edmonton, so I get that it happens, but I’m very curious where Maine is on the way to instead of some larger hub).

31.

Technically AZ was just standing on the other side of the state border from NV on the Hoover Dam. That may not count by HammerheadFistpunch’s rules, but I do have a picture of me there...so that’s a thing.

At one point, I was counting it if I spent the night there. But I’ve taken a handful of business trips to New England where I flew in to one of Providence/Manchester/Burlington, drove around several states, had meetings, stayed in different state, etc., and I lost track of which of those states I actually stayed in. I don’t recall doing anything more than flying into Manchester/Providence and driving away, but I might be wrong.

I think it’s mostly because my family has always been concentrated in the Midatlantic so even as a kid, my parents never went anywhere. I was 19 when I first stepped foot on an airplane, and that was to fly to Egypt. Every time I’ve ever considered flying to another state, I’ve realized that it’s not that much more expensive to just go somewhere internationally.

We flew to Paris and spent three days there, then rented a car (a Ford Focus), and drove up to Normandy then to Strasbourg and on to Munich. It was a blast. Agreed. However, I don’t think you really go to the US for visiting cities. With a few exceptions. New England is probably the oldest part and even that was, well, okay at best. Culturally it’s very homogeneous, relatively speaking that is, considering it’s sheer size. Drive a day in the US and just the landscape changes (slight hyperbole). Drive a day in Europe and the language, the culture, the architecture, the everything changes. The US does excel in various types of nature and landscapes.

I realize this is merely the point of view of an outsider who’s seen very little.

I understand completely, and that’s why I like Europe so much, though I’ve only seen a small part of it. I have often commented that you could plop yourself down in just about any major American city and have no idea where you are, because the roads look the same, the businesses look the same, the shopping malls look the same, the cars look the same. Homogenous indeed. Of course, it’s the lack of homogeneity in Europe that has led to centuries of warfare (generally speaking).

Distances are much greater in the US. Speeds are lower too.
