By regular I mean affordable and somewhat practical. Yes there’s probably Alfa 4Cs in the affordable range now, but you couldn’t get by with one as your only car.
And by good steering I mostly mean on centere feel (Wheel self straights and you can feel grip building up and going away at the front.) Not so much feedback (feeling all the bumps and texture of the road) although that’s still important, as well as responsiveness too.

for what is it, the 5th Gen cadillac Seville had amazing steering. just the right amount of feed back, always self centered, and pin point accurate (unless under heavy throttle and turning. but shut up 300fl-lb fwd..)

Ford Fusion has probably the best EPAS in is class. The Steering in my Taurus SHO isnt shabby, but lacked the feedback of the fusion.

I remember the BG Protégé (1990-1994) having pretty good steering feel, despite being a FWD econobox so nose-heavy (in LX trim) that one could lift both wheels on one side from the front jack point.

Gah! If it was RWD it’d be amazing! I refuse to ever own a FWD car with more than a 4 cyl because how little room there is under the hood.

I need to drive a modern Ford, I keep hearing so many mixed things about them. Although I’m sure it’s way better than modern GM’s. I drove a Cruze and it’s not an exaggeration to say it drives like a playstation.

Depends on which modern GM vehicles you’re talking about. The 6th gen Camaro shits on just about everything in its price range, 4 cyl to ZL-1. The Corvette is great as well, but it should be. Ford seems build more engaging regular cars, or hopped up versions of its regular cars. (ST/RS/SHO). I have my gripes with the SHO as well, but if you look at in comparison to other large cars, its pretty damned good. Doesnt help they put Ultra low rolling resistance tires on it, but the acceleration is instantaneous, the brakes are better than they should be on a 4400lb car.

I dont think you can really count the ND with its EPS. It just feels way too foreign while driving around at low speeds. Sure at racing speeds, its no different really (and probably actually better) than a hydraulic rack but when you are talking about “good steering” I care more about feel than anything else. Maybe I could get used to it, but my first try just felt like I was driving a big American car with pinky finger steering.
I generally use my NB Miata as a benchline for “good steering”. I REALLY enjoyed the steering in the ‘09 Cayman that I tried as well as the ‘14 FRS. Both of those made me just as happy as the Miata. Those are pretty “normal” cars as well.

That doesnt necessarily make it that nose heavy. If I lift my Miata from the front jacking point area, I can definitely get the back wheel off the ground too if I go high enough. Although Miatas are light with a short wheelbase too so that might be a bad example lol.

I’ve driven the new Mazda 6 and Mazda CX-5. Both have fantastic steering feel. I have not driven the new Mazda 3 but I’ve read positive feedback on those as well.

Oh, it’s more than that. On my NB I have to use most of my jack’s vertical range to lift both wheels. On a BG both wheels go up almost in unison.
On a positive note, that makes throttle-lift oversteer on a BG super easy. Wheeeeeeeee!

It has definitely been the most-Miata car that I have driven that wasnt a Miata. I didnt notice the “slow” that people harp on it for since I am just used to that. Having to work for the speed is a good thing as far as I am concerned, a lot less speeding tickets that way. But anyways, yeah the FRS/BRZ/86 is my number one vehicle that I could replace my Miata with and have zero complaints.

The best steering feel I’ve ever experienced is the manual rack with quick ratio rack and pinion in my MR2, but it’s also very heavy. Close second is a properly set up NA Miata with manual steering. One car with hydraulic steering I remember being very impressed by is my friend’s 87 non-turbo Supra with the TEMS package. Non turbo gives a lighter front end, TEMS helps give crisp turn-in, combined with the double wishbone suspension makes for some nice steering.
Not sure if you count those as “regular” cars, but they can be had for stupid cheap these days.

Agreed, the Cayman is arguably better at steering but it is not “Miata-like” in most other ways. It does not contain the same qualities of kinda slow, easy to work on, simple, cheap to buy, and cheap to modify. I think just the engine in a Cayman (especially if you go up to an S) puts it in a whole different league. I definitely could own both a Cayman and Miata at the same time and be happy. I dont think I would see the point of an FRS and Miata. Basically I think they (Cayman and FRS/Miata) fill entirely different roles for me. I hope to have a garage some day with Miata+Cayman-S or FRS+Cayman-S and then some sort of hot hatch WRX or ST or Speed3 or GTI.
Miata/FRS for the pretty heavily modified track/autox car (still street legal though so that I can canyon carve).
Cayman-S for the keep pristine but still track it occassionally.
Hot hatch for the longer trips and daily driving.

4th Generation F-bodies in good mechanical order have surprisingly great steering. It’s nicely weighted, has decent feel on center and through the turn, loads up nicely and provides enough feedback. Additionally, I also personally find them super predictable and easy to maintain when you decide to use the LS1 as an anti-traction device.

My Lancer was in the shop after a kid hit the rear bumper, and I totally forgot how much more resistance there was in it compared to the Focus loaner I had.

TBH I forgot all about Lancers. You never see them anymore, except EVOs at car shows.
