What the hell is a hook turn? And why do people ever do U-turns at an intersection like that? Is that legal in other parts of the country? I’ve never seen it done in Michigan.

Helpful infographic below. It’s basically a traffic pattern in a few left-side-driving countries (most notably, Australia) to reduce the congestion associated with waiting to turn across opposing traffic. Outside of one partially similar example in Illinois, I don’t think we have any of these intersections (much less any legal allowances for such a maneuver) in the U.S.

That seems pretty neat for like 1 or 2 cars trying to make that turn. But that seems impractical for the usual traffic problem of a dozen or so cars trying to do the same thing.

I’ve wondered that as well since I have yet to see one in person. I’d guess it’s best put to use in dense city areas that can’t easily accommodate dedicated turn lanes and/or without regular breaks in traffic to reasonably wait out the turn in a forward-traveling lane.

It’s pretty odd for sure. The picture I posted could have been a bit better in terms of scale and positioning, but the cross traffic generally has a stop line far enough back to let the hook-turning vehicles get over and avoid obstructing the forward-moving lane(s). That area basically becomes the turn lane.

The other thing is that what you are talking about ends up happening organically anyways, although just not legally. Most times when the light turns red, thats when everyone makes their left turns. Since there is just too much cross traffic to do so. Although these people will just wait in the middle of the road and everyone going straight will go around them. Making this a legal standard would certainly make it safer.
