Kinja'd!!!

Long story short, I happened to notice while cleaning my wheels that on one wheel, the finish is peeling off on the barrel to the point where all the wheel weights are about to fall off...

Should I just go ahead and JB Weld ( or some other product, maybe something less permanent ) the wheel weights back on ( I know exactly where they go ), or should I just tape over the weights ( or even just remove them completely ) long enough for a shop to re-balance the wheel?

If you’re due for an R&B soon, I’d just take them off and keep your speed under 130. Otherwise, some kind of goopy automotive adhesive should do the trick. Something that can be removed with elbow grease, but is stable.

The safer bet would be to get them rebalanced. if you remove it, depending on how much of it it is, and how fast you drive, it’s gonna be a shaky mess. Nothing dramatic if you drive for a little while, but uncomfortable, and bad for your car. If you use JB weld, depending on the quantity, you will unbalance the wheel, and the guy that will have to clean up that mess will charge you for that and curse you over 7 generations

Please no. Use some of the metal tape used on hvac pipes to hold them down.

If you’re going to stick them back down, use the metal tape used for HVAC work. It holds up to the temps wheels see, even on track.

That’s what I was thinking - thanks for confirming.

If I remove the weights, I would get the wheel re-balanced early next week. I don’t plan on driving that far, and I’m a bit worried that I’m going to throw the wheel weights if I don’t do something immediately. Though, I have no idea how long this has been going on, and they have held on up to this point, so what is a few more days?

If I go that route, I’ll be sure to do that. Right now I’m thinking that I’ll just bite the bullet and have a shop actually re-balance the wheel.

I just had the tires rotated about 500 miles ago. I’ll probably just bring it in to have the wheel re-balanced.

yeah, that tape is amazing. we used it at the test lab I worked at on vibration/temp fixtures to hold down accelerometer and thermocouple wires. It doesn’t let go, yet also doesn’t leave sticky crap all over when you remove it.

even worse is people who put a can of Fix-a-flat in it and don’t tell you, so when you break the bead you get a nice blast of ammonia in the face.

Just asked my dad who sold these damn things for over ten years and he said it’s better to get it fixed.

I luckily didn’t have that yet, I don’t do wheel changes every day though

How much weight is there?

1 oz or 28.35 grams between 4 weights, all equal size.

Should be ok for a couple of days, but I would avoid highway speeds

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m not going too far this weekend, so I’ll bring it in on Monday.

I ended up getting all four wheels re-balanced at the dealer for free - they were balanced ~4,400 miles ago when I got new tires there. I guess they considered it warranty work on their job, which was unexpected.

I’m going to write a separate post about it later after I get some more miles on the new balance job, but I think the weights on that wheel may have been loose for a while - I’m pretty sure my steering feels a lot more consistent, and I believe a steering wheel shimmy that would come and go at ~75 mph and above I’ve been meaning to track down is fixed, too. In fact, the inconsistent steering went away after i removed the loose weights on Friday...
