My nephew (and godson) had his 10th birthday this week.
He can be a real pain in the ass since he’s got a lot of energy and uses it to annoy his little sister and his cousin, or to do dumb stuff in general, as 10 year olds tend to do. He is pretty smart, but also gets frustrated very fast and gets whiny. He needs to “man up” a bit.

I know he likes Lego kits, but he already got a nice set for his birthday from his parents, So I didn’t want to gift him the lesser Lego.

Instead, I thought I would get him something that requires him to focus, and to canalize his energy in, at least for the time he needs to build it. I also want him to learn something.

Also, it’s a V8 !

My French is more than rusty. Does he have to build it from many individual parts or is it more like a toy?

I might buy a second one for myself if it’s not too shaby

Awesome, I’m sure he will like that, and before you know you can let him rebuilt the engine on the Belair, haha.

Also, do you have any idea what the design is based on? It’s not the typical small block, seeing it is some kind of OHC design, but the fan does suggest something old and probably american.

I would have prefered gears, but it will teach him the perks of overhead cams

As long as it’s used for something positive it’s a good thing!

Yes, I hope he will learn to be a bit more patient. Otherwise he’ll never be able to make it work

y u no chain

I actually had one of these, but a 4-banger. Still cool. Now you have me wanting another... but I’d like an OHV V8 to match my truck :)

I hope it will give him some ideas, and maybe continue with a petrol rc car someday.

I have no idea, as you said, fan (and also generator) say vintage american, but ohc and timing belt make it seem more modern.

It does look like it started as a small block of some kind... maybe it was easier to make an OHC engine this way?

Yeah, maybe they just added the OHC to make it more modern. Which could also explain the odd looking intake.

Yeah, seems likely. The head looks quite like the inline 4 version:

Kinja'd!!!

And I know they used to have a pushrod small block before, so maybe they used the shortblock design of that, and combined it with the heads of the inline 4.

Chains are fine too, but only if they don’t elongate *cough cough Audi* or the have failing tensioners *cough cough Peugeot THP*
I just like the simplicity and reliability of gears (Well except if you’re David Tracy)

You’re probably right.
I think I would have gone with the pushrods, but this is the one that popped up

About 7/8 of the way through ours, also built the 4.

Kinja'd!!!

saw a guy on youtube get the pushrod one up to 7,000 rpm. was duly impressed. Did a little googling and the pusrod one came out in the late 50's and most resembles a Stude or Packard design. This one strikes me as a Ford mod-motor.

Nice! I hope my nephew won’t loose patience over this.
This is the kind of things that is highly rewarding if you get it to work, and highly frustrating if not.

We’ve taken trampoline breaks. It’s gone together easy, as we built the Smithsonian 4 banger, which we built to 99% before we discovered we had put THE BLOCK in backwards. Funny thing was we got the timing belt and drive motor on and it sort of worked! (not well). Tore that one down for a rainy afternoon build, and my boy is so proud of the v8 he want’s me to drop it off at school one morning. excellent for indoctrinating young gearheads.

That the idea :)
We don’t have the best relation since I have no patience at all for kids, especially when they aim to annoy you. But the few times we did something together it kinda worked out quite well

Do it in a couple 45 minute sessions, I made him read the instructions, and held things down for him to screw down. worked well. Also set him on the animated engines website, so he talked about engines the whole time.

High energy, low tolerance level kids tend to be great in 1:1 situations. Less so when they are expected to function as a member of a larger group.
