Kinja'd!!!

I’ve ran through the course a few times so I am familiar with it. From experience what are some things I should make sure I do and don’t do?

Drive it like you stole it, just make sure you give the salesman a heads up you’re going to gun it.

Do what you can in order to relieve nervousness (legally). What I did was I asked the person testing me to tell them something about themselves, just to remind me that they’re a person too. The guy and I ended up talking the entire drive about something we had in common.

As MrDakka said, head on a swivel. Make it noticeable that you’re looking at your mirrors and looking around.

If you make a mistake, roll with it, and don’t let it get to you. Don’t let one mistake snowball into many because you’ve lost your nerves.

I’ve known multiple people who failed by going through a stop sign returning the DMV lot after the actual test portion of the test was over. So don’t do that.

Otherwise, be polite to the tester (including making sure the interior of your car is clean), drive alertly, cautiously, and safely. Nothing on the test should be hard, so if you pay attention, you should be fine. Even a terrible driver can get it together for 15 minutes to do the test.

Ya... def engage in some conversation prior. Will loosen you up. As I’m sure you’re qualified it will also humanize the tester for you. Good luck!

You’ve gotten some good advice on here. One thing I’ll add is don’t stress about it. If you do fail, it’s not like you can never take the test again. Don’t go into it thinking that your life depends on you passing.

Clearly take a self driving car there.

I guess other than that be alert and courteous.

That’s a good thing to keep in mind, no matter how intimidating they may seem they’re a person too. Thanks!

Yeah, one of my friends failed for not signaling into the sport after the test was over.

Just washed and cleaned the interior tonight so it’s all ready to go. That’s true, thanks!

You know how to drive, right? Just drive. Do what the examiner says, make sure you’re checking mirrors, blind spots, etc. before changing lanes, parking, whatever.

The only points I lost on my driver’s test were for looking in my rear view mirror *as* I shifted into reverse while parallel parking. He told me afterwards it was mostly because he hated giving perfect scores (dick) but he also made a good point that if I got rear-ended and I was in reverse, it would be my fault for travelling in the wrong direction.

But really, demonstrate your good driving habits, don’t do anything rash, keep your cool, come to a full stop every time, don’t run into anything, and you’ll be fine. Remember that literally thousands of people pass this test who probably shouldn’t. You’ll be fine.

I was going to suggest you clean the car. It starts the exam off on the right foot. Also don’t cut across parking spots. They used to fail people for that back in the day.

Good luck, you’ll be fine.

Never stop practicing! ...even after the test is over.

Every day is a new chance to hit your marks and keep honing your skills.

If there is right or left turn followed closely by right or left turn cancel your turn signal briefly between them. I got a few points deducted on my G license test for not canceling my signal between close turns.

Just remember: If you’re going hard enough left, you’ll find yourself turning right. If in doubt, throttle out. In a spin, both feet in. No Rockfords. Most instructors enjoy Sammy Hagar’s hit about driving 10 under, “Can’t Drive 55". Don’t try to explain to them that it’s hell on the throwout bearing to keep your foot on the clutch at stops, they can’t handle the truth.
