Boy, they really don’t want to cancel these things. I know he’s full of shit (the finance manager) when he says they can’t refund the money because the loan was based on the paint protection adding value to the car. However, I also feel like it’s partially my fault for agreeing to the protection in the first place. I think I’ll be filing this under “lessons learned” instead of spending the next several weeks talking to managers and getting nowhere.

Oppo, I appreciate your help on this. I know there are some of you who will say to go to the guy’s manager and then that manager’s manager, but I think I’m done with this. Sorry to let you guys down, but I’ll remember this next time I buy a new car. It’s not the first time I’ve wasted money on a car-related thing. Damn.

It ’ s a booked sale in their mind. I think the only thing you can do is refuse to take delivery of the car unless they remove it. rule number 1 of negotiation, always be willing to walk away.

Sorry to hear you aren’t going to fight it. But it’s a bullshit reason they gave you. I say a strongly worded message to the automaker can get you out of this though.

I never buy new cars, I hate those motherfuckers. There aren’t really any newer cars I would want, those V8 Lexus coupes are pretty nice, for sure would rather find a gently used one in a few years. I’ve only bought one car new and that was when I was in the military, didn’t have much time, I will never do it again. Gave that car to my mom a year later so I don’t care, she likes it.

Was the cost of the paint protection included in the loan? Or to put it another way, is the amount of your loan more than, less than, or equal to than the agreed-upon purchase price of the car?

If the loan is for more than the purchase price of the car, and part of that is due to the paint protection, it makes things complicated.

If the loan amount has nothing to do with the paint protection then you have more room to negotiate because effectively you’d be paying for the paint protection out of pocket.

Yeah, I think I’ll return to the used car camp after this. Had to give a new car a shot, though.

I think you’re right, but it’s just not worth the pain after a certain point. I think I’ve used up my fighting willpower on other things this month.

Maybe you have enough energy left to leave a Yelp review or whatever calling them out? Not just for revenge, but to to maybe help out others who might encounter the same fuckery. There has to be one or two things the internet is good for.

Once you’ve taken the car into your possession, it’s over. Next time you can refuse to do so until the numbers are right.

Anyway, enjoy the new car!

Yes, it’s in the loan, above the purchase price of the car. If it was out of pocket, I’d be taking things farther. Where I’m at now is just anger with myself for not being more intelligent during the finance meeting. Ok, and quite a bit of anger at the dealer for pushing this crap...

Oh not to worry, they’ll try and sell you paint protection on those too. Actually, when i bought my S4 back 4 years ago, they offered the clear film protection for the hood and leading edges, and that stuffs actually a worthwhile product. But they were a bit overpriced, as expected.

Yeah, thanks. Lesson learned, for sure. At least the car is fun, so I’ll soon be able to move on.

I plan to. My sales guy was great, but the finance guy is your standard-issue pointless “what value do you add?” type.

At this point I’d say your only chance is to contact the bank directly, explain that the finance manager hard sold you on this paint protection and packaged it into the loan before you knew what was going on, and now that you understand what happened you’re really upset.

Ask if there’s any way to re-do the loan for the car without the paint protection. If they say yes, get something in writing. Because that way if the finance guy says “well the bank’s not going to do this,” you can show that to him.

Ultimately the finance guy is a go-between for you and the bank and sometimes you have to go over his head, not just within the dealership but directly to the bank. Did you finance directly with Subaru? Their financing is through Chase so I doubt they give a shit if some dealer finance guy makes his spiff on BS paint protection. Talk with Subaru of America customer service, and Subaru Finance, whoever you need to get involved. The manufacturer can put much more pressure on a dealer than an individual consumer who the dealer already has screwed once.

If they say no, well, you might be screwed. I don’t know the exact date you bought the car but if it’s before you’ve made your first payment you might have some leeway.

I got scammed on gap insurance, never again. Tom McPartlands articles on these subjects are very good.

I’d say this is a good step.

Dealerships are very aware of their online reviews. I wrote a 5-star yelp review of my BMW dealer and mentioned my sales person by name. The manager direct messaged me thanking for the review and the sales person sent me a letter with a $25 Amazon gift card thanking me since she sold a few cars off the review.

Per my other post, reach out to Subaru directly and see what they can do to help. I’d work through them before taking things public. But if you don’t get anywhere with them, post a 1-star review of the dealership. Explain that you liked your sales guy but the finance guy (mention him by name if you remember) hard sold you on BS paint protection then rolled it into the loan before you knew what was going on. Say you tried to go back once you realized they pulled a fast one on you, but they refused to work with you.

I know an independent dealer who can find stuff for me, he sells tons of Leaves/Leafs right now coming off leases. He is a good guy and it’s as is. I got my 2006 CRV from him for commuting, old lady owned and like new.

I’ve only bought a new car once in my life, but hey you bought a nice thing that you will enjoy, and someone profited by selling it to you. Life goes on :)

You win some you lose some, everything is a learning lesson. I happened to know in advance about this “Paint Protection Scotch Guard” tactic well in advance so I shot it down as soon as they brought it up but I can see how one can be duped. Just make sure you read whatever warranty the protection brings and take full advantage of any of it’s features like if the dealership is willing to refresh the protection annually if it seems to be failing.

I’m with you, I normally only buy used. The first new car I bought was a Pacifica minivan and that was only because it was the first year available and we didn’t like the old t&cs or the odyssey. Otherwise it’s all used all the time. Why should I take the depreciation hit?

If it’s a good ceramic coating job, it’s really expensive and potentially worth the money. A full clear wrap of everything up to the A-pillars/front edge of the doors is probably an even better investment if you wash your car regularly.

If I wasn’t a cheap bastard and could readily part with the thousands it is for one of those, I’d probably do it because it would keep my car from getting so filthy so quickly around here. Wax just isn’t enough...

My sales experience with Kia was good right up until the finance guy had us in his office, and tried to sell us those options. When we declined, he seemed to get a little miffed at us, like he was counting on that little bit of gravy. We just blew it off (we are the kind of people who never get extended warranties on anything), but I’m not surprised if plenty of people get put off their guard by an otherwise decent sales experience and get caught by the blindside.

Tell them (finance, sales, GM, etc.) that you will make your scores on their precious surveys reflect your unhappiness.

That’s all good advice, and I’m sure it would work, especially calling the bank about it. Unfortunately, even the thought of all that has me losing sleep. I’m ready to move on and enjoy the car. They win this time, but in the end their entire business model is going away, or at least it should.

Yeah, no gap insurance this time, but the protection stuff got me. As I said, I should have done more research into the new car buying process itself instead of just the cars I wanted.

I dunno man, $1000 isn’t chump change, even spread over the course of the loan. My personality doesn’t let me let go of things like this until they’re resolved or I know I’ve exhausted all my options. None of what I suggested is guaranteed to work, but if you think about it, a couple calls to Subaru may get the ball rolling towards a real solution, and if not, at least you know you researched all your options.
