Kinja'd!!!

The Toyota Corolla.

Now, you are probably thinking I’m going to come up with the “soulless appliance” talk, but no, I hate the Corolla for a very different reason.

See, the Corolla became some sort of status symbol among the middle-class when Brazil left the right-wing Military Dictatorship. During that time imports were halted and only the national companies kept building cars, so when importation was allowed again, every middle-aged guy went and got a Corolla since it was better than the crap the automakers had been building for the past 30 years.

Kinja'd!!!

And they just kept buying them, the middle-class got older and their sons got older and they just kept buying Corollas. Hell, even now the Corolla over performs the Civic in sales by a margin of 3 to 1.

The Corolla became the official old people’s car, much like Buick in the US. It was a comfortable, reliable and rational thing.

And as I said earlier, it became some sort of status symbol among the middle-class, especially the poorer middle-class from the countryside (or the “interior” as we call it). Hell, we even got a version with tacky wooden interior.

Kinja'd!!!

So why do I hate it?

I hate it because every single old person ignoring stop signs, driving on bald tires, making dangerous manoeuvres because they can’t see/ are stubborn is driving a Corolla of some vintage.

Every single person doing 10 under on the left lane is driving a Corolla.

Every single asshole with plates from the middle of nowhere driving slow in the middle of a two lane street/road and making me miss the lights is driving a Corolla.

I fucking hate it. And everything it stands for.

Corolla is innocent. Actually it is the victim here

Corolla isn’t driving on it’s own in left late 10 under blowing through stop signs...

Corolla is a victim here. A reliable* car being used by unreliable persons. Persons who depend on reliable* car to get them places in however way they can operate it.

If Countache was as reliable and affordable, they would also drive those around.

*Terms and conditions apply. See participating dealer near you. Reliable used loosely as all cars break down eventually.

That hate seems a little misplaced though. You hate it for the people that drive it, not the car itself. Since this is an ultra popular car, it is understandable that many lousy drivers would have it, just by sheer numbers.

The car itself is perfectly fine for what it is. It’s not the most exiting vehicle out there, but it really isn’t bad. It sells in huge numbers for a reason.

No, Toyota keeps catering to this crowd, they basically keep building the same car with big buttons and simple controls because the main demographic is the elderly.

This is not unique to Brazil. It’s simply the clientele they attract, wherever you happen to live.

It’s especially bad here, they don’t drive like this just because they can’t drive, they do it because they feel entitled.

The Corolla isn’t seen as an appliance as it is in the rest of the world, it is seen as something special.

If you were making/selling widgets, and people were buying them, you would be making/selling more widgets... Basic economics. Supply and demand.

So different sentiments towards the car, same end result. The power of the Corolla is strong. No matter how the public views it, it will always attract the worst drivers.

Essentially, a Corolla is an enclosure with a dick in it

I hate the Corolla because the owners can’t understand how horrible it is to drive.

The 2009 Corolla my wife had when I met her still ranks #1 on the “Worst car I’ve ever driven” list, and I’ve driven some incredible beaters. But voice that opinion in front of Toyota lovers and you get an immediate and borderline violent reaction.

Granted, the 2001 Corolla my sis-in-law has is a perfectly normal boring car. Not bouncy or uncomfortable or dangerously unreactive like that 2009 was.

Gotta love that toyota made the same car for 10 years tho. That’s like GM levels of laziness. 03-13 were essentially the same car.

I kinda see your point. I don’t hate it though. I just think it’s boring as hell. Life is too short to drive boring, dull, mundane, slow cars like a Corolla or Civic or Mazda 3 or Focus. Drive something cool people!

You hit the nail in the head.

A LOT of Bad drivers feel entitled to driving like they do, even moreso elderly people.
