Redundant link to article in case of Kinja

Let me be clear - BOO THIS MAN! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Let me also say he’s......wrong. In stark contrast to my support of many other hot takes this morning (nothing gets me up in the morning like a nice fresh stack of hot takes) his argument is BS. And to save you all from the pain I can sum up his reason for excising all sub 500cc bikes form the market in one sentence - He was stupid on a 50cc pit bike and tried to dash away from a land cruiser.

Kinja'd!!!

He apparently only “got his bell rung” but I think it broke the bell in the process. I guess he forgot that super lightweight starter bikes can still out accelerate contemporary SUVs and sedans even with just 20-30hp. My pig of a bike, with it’s trail friendly gears requiring three shifts to hit 60, will still spring from a dead stop to 60 in under 5 seconds. And it only has 30ish horsepower for 450lbs of bike.

I’ll sum up my dismissal of this take with a line from the comments. “ If you can’t safely handle a routine situation with a 300cc bike, then the problem is with the rider. ”

So, if I understand this hot take correctly, we should teach our kids to drive in Hellcats, and beginning pilots should fly Boeing 737's instead of Cessna 150's? Seems legit. Oppo seems to be full of hot takes this AM...

I feel like it should be common knowledge that light weight = quick, regardless of how small the horsepower number seems. I’ve never ridden a motorcycle of any sort, but me and my cousins would routinely risk life and limb on a 200lb go-kart with a 5hp Tecumseh when we were kids. A light tap of the throttle ought to tell you all you need to know, no matter how little power it seems to have.

No, it’s not Kinja’d at all - - I’m just being stubborn and not clicking through, so as to not give the hot take any more clicks. :) So I was just being snarky, based on what you wrote—

Honestly, I can’t ride a bike... I suck at it and don’t even have a license. I think an Hayabusa would suit me well though. Sure it has insane possibilities, but it scares me shitless.

It’s how I’ve dealt with powerful cars my entire life and why I’ve never had an accident. Power scares me shitless. I’m much more likely to crash my Austin Mini that I drive full throttle on the edge all the time, than I’m likely to crash a Corvette... (Owned one before)

I think I’d be the same person if I were to actually learn to ride a bike and get a license. Probably worse lol. An Hayabusa would most certainly be a safer bike for me than something I know I can play with, that is light and that I can hammer around :)

So yeah, if I were to get my license I’d get an Hayabusa as a first daily driven bike. I’d have something else to learn how to push a bike around on a track, but for daily drives... The more powerful and the more scared I am, the better :)

My opinion is somewhat baseless, as I’ve had very minimal experience on a motorcycle. This probably has something to do with me spending the last 20 years staring at the damage an ultra high strength steel exoskeleton (aka a car) sustains in collisions. I want no part of that on a motorcycle.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Even though I’ve not spent any time piloting a motorcycle on public roads, I’ve cycled quite a bit on a couple different continents. Even in a car, I don’t know that I’ve approached an intersection I had right of way in without being fairly aware of what’s coming, and prepared for them to not follow the rules of the road. It was a goddamned Land Cruiser, how do you not see that coming?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And finally, at the end of the fourth paragraph, a half-hearted acknowledgement that maybe he fucked up. His solution? More power (in best Clarkson voice)!

( Motorcycle virgin question: wouldn’t you really want a footful of rear brake more than a handful of front? I’d anticipate getting launched over the bars and becoming a speedbump for the Cruiser if he’d chosen that alternative ).

Very rarely have I found acceleration to be the best option for avoiding an accident. Usually, braking and evasive maneuvering serves me well. I’d imagine this to be especially so on something as nimble as a 50cc bike.

I’m also curious how much time transpired between his Land Cruiser incident, and the “attempt to overtake a slow-going Grandma” on a Rebel 300, where he now considers himself a “seasoned rider”.

TLDR: I admittedly know nothing about, but still like like motorcycles, two wheels good, but this guy is a twit.

While the rear brake is an excellent way to help balance and steady a bike in low speed maneuvers (it acts as a way to limit power delivery and smooth things out) it often isn’t powerful enough to do serious stopping on its own.

But your assessment is 100% dead on. Yes, he needed more power to speed out of the way of the land cruiser....but he shouldn’t have needed to do that in the first place. That was poor judgement on his part. Plain and simple.

I imagine a few years have passed but I don’t think he’s learned a whole lot. I have never heard any other motorcycle reviewer claim that they couldn’t safely ride the rebel 300. I think he’s just a terrible rider.

It appears that the maturity and decision making capability of the rider is more important than the power/abilities of your first motorcycle. Who woulda thunk it.

What makes no sense to me is that he says he rode dirt bikes as a kid but he didn’t know how to operate a clutch? I only have experience on a shitty old yamaha 125cc enduro bike from the late 70s I got when I was like 11 for 300$, I traded it for the shittiest quad in the world too, big mistake. And my uncles 250 Kawasaki enduro of the same vintage. But I knew how to operate a clutch, and as far as I’m aware all dirt bikes have clutchs?

I agree with the sentiment, but driving and riding are two very different things. Having fear on a bike isn’t necessarily a good thing. Fear leads to accidents.

Rear brakes aren’t good for stopping. They’re used more for stabilizing the bike.

Recommending people learn to ride on a 45 hp, 500cc bike is a hot take? Most people consider a 500cc bike a beginners bike. I do think it’s funny he recommends a new 500cc Honda over a vintage 400cc bike when my vintage Honda 450 makes the same power at the Rebel 500.

My first bike was a ‘79 CM185 and had 10hp. I pretty much had to ride in traffic at the whim of other drivers. I couldn’t really accelerate out of bad situations, and was usually left with kicking doors (in a you’re about to run me into a curb way, not a I’m going to kick your ass way). I moved up to an SV650 after a few months and did fine. The seating angle was the biggest shock at first.

The new 500s are meant for new/inexperienced riders for sure, and if you’re comfortable with them, more power to you. But they aren’t necessary. That’s the issue here - the author is stating that anything under 500cc is dangerous, but as evidence he cites personal stories that show he is a terrible rider who probably shouldn’t be on a bike.

A someone who has ridden a 10hp bike in city traffic and on a highway, I would have to agree that it is probably safer to be on something with a bit more power. Obviously if you’re a bad rider than it doesn’t matter. I ride a forty five year-old bike in a big city with minimal protection, so I might not be the best judge of safety.

04/27/2017 at 16:14, STARS: 0

Oh I wouldn’t ride the really low displacement bikes on the freeway (I think you have to have at *least* 200cc to be highway legal?) but around town, when you’re getting your first taste of riding? 250cc is plenty. Hell, everywhere else makes you start off on scooters and 125cc bikes and they end up doing pretty well.

Kinja'd!!! "ThePenguin" (ThatOtherGuy7)

I think it’s more the writers assertion that anything under 500cc is unecessary.
