Ok, OPPO hivemind: As a first-time new car buyer, I agreed in the finance discussions to an “environmental protection” add-on for the interior and exterior. Supposedly protects against bird poo and other corrosive things.

I’m having it installed next week, but I’m thinking I got suckered and am considering trying to cancel and get a refund.

What do you guys think? Waste of money? Will I even be able to cancel, even though I haven’t had it installed yet?

Yeah, waste of money. Like, they just made it up waste of money. They aren’t going to actually install anything ( maybe a coat of wax) so of course you can cancel. Subaru clearcoat dissolves at the thought of bird poo, but everything else will be fine for a day or two.

Are you that worried about birds pooping inside your car? Buy a spray can of Scotchguard for the interior and have a coat of good wax put on. I worked at a dealer many years ago - it’s big profit for them. Save your money.

Go back to the dealership and say you heard Trump is cutting the environmental protection budget so you don’t want to pay for this crap anymore.

Cancel it. F&I selling add one pisses me off. When I bought the FoST, I was so worked up over the delay in getting into the finance office, that I told them, if he even tried to sell me anything the deal was off. And I was dead serious.

You got scammed. None of those “coatings” work worth a shit. No better than a good wax job anyway. It would be a way better use of money to hire a local detailer to put a bitchin synthetic wax on your car. Something acrylic-based like Klasse will last a good 3-6 months and will stop nasty gunk from sticking to your paint.

The only long-term solution for paint protection that actually works is clear films made by companies like 3M or Xpel. I’ve never heard of any car dealer applying such products. It’s usually paint/bodywork/tint shops.

$1000, but it includes warranty on the paint for a few years. Not looking forward to fighting with them over this... I’m not cut out for being trapped in a room with a finance guy.

Is a wax recommended at all on a brand new car? I had heard no wax for the first year.

You haven’t received it yet, so you should have no difficulty cancelling it. If not the F&I guy, the sales manager, general manager, whoever should be able to take care of it. Your financing isn’t contingent on spending an extra grand for a dealership add on.

Heard that from where exactly? Some old-timer? That hasn’t been even a tiny bit true for at least 30 years. Waaaaaay back in the day the paint on brand new cars was soft and needed time to harden. That is no longer the case at all. Modern OEM automotive paints contain very little solvent and are backed up by chemical paint-hardeners that are mixed in. Once a modern car leaves the factory it is ready for wax and detailing.

Here’s automotive detailing expert Mike Phillips explaining why you should be protecting the paint on your new car from day one:

Toyota offers it for the 4runner at least. I am not sure what brand though, probably a “toyota” brand. not sure if it is worth it in that regard. I was thinking about getting it though.

Yea, I’ve seen the manufacturer-supported stuff. Subaru does it too. I didn’t think it was dealer-installed though, but I could definitely be wrong on that.

An independent film shop should give you a better deal on a better product. There is a HUGE difference between premium clear films and the generic stuff. Check out this video of 3M’s Scotch Guard Pro whipping ass on two other top-shelf clear film options:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

All three of these films are better than the more generic stuff on the market and yet there’s still a big performance difference between them.

I appreciate the info. I asked, it is dealer installed, but I seriously doubt they are using 3m stuff so thanks for the info. Looks like if I go that route I will get it aftermarket.

It’s all about the installer. You want someone who lays film all day every day and that’s all they ever do. It’s high tech, but there’s an art to it as well. Little tricks like strategically shrinking the film in places with a heat gun or even a hand-held propane torch to get it to fit juuuust right over the complex curves of a modern car body.

There certainly could be some dealers out there doing enough daily volume to have employees installing film at that level. In my experience though, third-party independent shops are where it’s at for automotive film installation and a lot more besides.

Happy tuning!

Get out of it if you can. That warranty won’t cover you if you do any actual driving. Rock chip? Coating has been comprimised. Warranty void. Missed your inspection by a day? Warranty void. It’s been breathed on? Warranty void.

And even if the warranty is voided, the coating is still there, right? Well, I’ve worked at a dealership that had this kind of stuff come out of the F&I office. Half the time, it was never anything better than just a plain old wax. It may have had some other additives, but I doubt that they did much good. You could have bought the good stuff, which is a chemical that needs to be buffed into the paint, but I get the feeling that the benefit there is marginal to begin with. Those same cars would come in later for an oil chance and would look and feel just like any other car of comparable age.

The only one I’ve seen pay out is the interior coverage that covers damage to seats and fabrics. It does take a while for the claim to go through, but they replaced a handful of seats that came back with cigarette burns. Stains, we were meant to shampoo it until it came out, though. If you don’t smoke in your car, you’re better off getting a few cans of Scotchguard and treating the interior yourself.

Bottom line: get back there and unwind as much of that coverage as you can.

People get “New Car Prep” work done all the time. AMMO NYC on YouTube has a few and Detailer’s Domain. They use orbital polishers to remove all the scratches and paint defects from shipping and apply coatings to the paint and wheels.

Ceramic based coatings are definitely not a scam, but you might think that if you don’t know how they work. The dealership applying the coating is definitely a scam.

Huzer is 100% correct. I hate confrontation, myself, but just prepare yourself with the facts before you go in - I need to brace myself a bit in order to deal with this stuff, personally. They have not provided the product yet, and haven’t incurred any cost yet, at all. They will try to re-sell you on it, so just re-read all of the comments here, and remind yourself that it’s $1000 of your hard-earned money (plus financing costs!). You deserve to get it back -don’t let them turn it into an “it’s only $12 per month” discussion - it’s $1,000. How long do you have to work to earn that? Good luck!!
