Colleague from nightshift dropped off his car at 10am today.

Always nice to have a new car to clean. Okay not new as in the car being new. It’s a 61 plate so a late 2011, VW Golf TDi, but a new to me car to clean.

The car had brake dust baked in on the wheels (apparently for three years), Took some shifting.

Traffic film but no real dirt.

Some baked in bird bombs.

Kinja'd!!!

Milk stain on the passenger seat.

Kinja'd!!!

Post first washes (degreased, rinsed, washed, rinsed, tar removed) a liberal amount of fallout remover was used. Car bleeding heavily.

Rinsed off. Now to tackle to bird bomb ‘ghosts’, micro scratching and hand marks. Children have natural oils in their hands which dry up as they get older but can also be caused by moisturiser in hand creams.

Kinja'd!!!

Easily removed with a good polish (I’ve found very few things will remove it sufficiently that it doesn’t come back).

Kinja'd!!!

Rewashed with Gyeon Q2M snow foam (shampoo and sealant in one), pressure washed to activate.

Nice beading.

Dried with Gyeon Cure.

Still a little mark at the rear of the passenger seat.

Kinja'd!!!

I didn’t pick on it at first but then I noticed it.

Do you see it?

Yep, a 2.0TDi VW Golf Mk6 automatic. An automatic Golf.

I’ve never come across a Golf or even a similar small car with an automatic gearbox.

Not a bad three and a half hours.

Can I ship my Accent over for you to do after this Canadian winter’s layers of dirt, salt and grime? :(

Well now you do, it’s great and I am never going back to a “medieval gearbox” as my partner now refers to them!

Having that little Citigo as a loner yesterday (even though it was a great and fun little car) just reminded me how annoying a manual gearbox is for city driving.

You’ve never driven an auto have you? You’re welcome to come and drive mine.

I’ve never driven an auto, no.

I’ve never wanted to, well maybe once or twice to see what it was like.

I’m still lamenting over the loss of the handbrake in the Superb.

My city isn’t big enough for it to be an issue of annoyance.

Apparently the DSG box is great and learns from your driving quite quickly but I love tactile things, being part of it. Hell I’m the guy that would rather spend 200x as long hand polishing a car than use a rotary or DA.

When they get rid of the manual I’ll consider it.

Till then I’ll stick with my manual gear stick, hand polishing and my Blackberry.
