That’s a weird discovery. I usually like asymmetric details in vehicles, but that’s completely pointless asymmetric design. With narrow (US) plates it will look even less sensible.

it’s horrifically asymmetrical in a way that looks more knockoff-Dali than it does intentional design.

The plate size is really strange and it doesn’t look like they could even fit the standard euro plates. The one that’s on there appears to be taller and possibly narrower.

Let’s keep the styling language needed for a back-door mounted spare tire even though we don’t put it there anymore!

The original Disco may have had serious QC and design problems, but it had a lot of elegance. The door was one part of that - door window opening high on one side to accommodate hinges and tire mount, low on side opposite the (RHD) driver to enable a view out the back, distinctive look. Then the LR3/LR4 with the switch to liftgate and tailgate had it reversed, for whatever reason, and stuck the spare tire carrier (when equipped) *over* the cutout. The new one featuring a simple hatch rather than a door or tailgate makes it much more of a minivan, which, *ick*.

I wholeheartedly agree. Functional styling is very elegant but trying to keep remnants of a functional design around with no purpose besides keeping the design just does not work.

Also, I’d never really considered the window on the LR3/LR4, that’s idiotic! The whole point of the window being longer on one side was to retain as much visibility as possible with the tire there, why would they extend the glass down behind the tire

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
04/26/2017 at 15:08, STARS: 0

In fairness to them, most LR3/LR4s weren’t meant to have a spare tire there, so the fault lies more in the implementation of the spare tire mount than the styling. I think they switched it in recognition/expectation of more LHD sales than RHD. So, now we’re back to where it was on the RHD models now that the “dip” is just styling, because of reasons.
