At first I was like “Well this is one instance where the miata engine would be a power increase” but then I looked it up and these things had 130-150hp when new. Did the JDM ratings account for accessories or were they like the US market and just said “BOLLOCKS TO IT!” and stripped their motors down to add to the number?

This is pre-SAE net ratings. Engine rating standards were changed for US market cars for 1972, showing a difference of about 10-25% depending on the vehicle and parasitic losses.

The 1600 was advertised with 96 gross HP for the US market, which would put it closer to 85 by today’s ratings. The 2000 was advertised with 135 hp, putting it closer to 120 hp.

Then the thought of “Holy crap, a miata engine is a massive power increase” is what stays. 140hp with a modern fuel system would make that little roadster scream.
