What to do with the MR2?

As I suspected, now that I got my Frontier as a DD, I sadly don’t find myself driving the MR2 much anymore. If it’s a nice day and I want to go for a spirited drive, I’d rather take the SV650. If it’s not a nice day or I just want to be comfy, I’ll take my truck.

The one purpose left for it would be for autocross and the occasional track day. The problem there is that the engine swap bumps me to a Mod class where the car has no hope of being competitive unless I go full racecar including hoosiers, gutted interior, coilovers, and serious engine build to get a lot more horsepower. Alternatively I could try to swap back to a stock engine, but that would a lot of time and effort to just lose 50 hp. That’s no fun at all...

Of course I could just keep racing it for fun as I have been doing, but I tend to be pretty competitive and goal oriented so autocross just isn’t as fun when the Vette’s, SR20 swapped 240's, and turbo’d Elise’s are wiping the floor with me. And if I won’t be competitive I find it hard to justify spending money on good tires (which it needs, the tires on it now are shot) and other go-fast parts, especially when I’d rather spend that money on motorcycle stuff.

So I’m thinking about selling it :(

So what say you Oppo? What would you do with the MR2? Should it stay or should it go?

Honestly it sounds like it might be time to let go.

Convert it to a time machine, go back 18 months and sell it to me :\

Good luck anyways! Always hard to part with a beloved companion.

Sounds like you want to sell it, but are afraid you’ll regret it, which you will once nostalgia sets in. But it’s probably for the best

Sell the Frontier.

Or, more seriously, focus on track days instead of autocross, and keep modding the car to keep up with your improving skills/experience?

1. Hang onto it for a year or so until I have a house.

2.

In all seriousness, it’s a really cool car, and it would be good to see it driven more. You could also get into one of these “cheap” endurance series (AER/WRL/etc) and run it there. Cars are generally classed by power to weight. But you’d have to strip it out and cage it and such, and it seems pretty clean as is.

What would you be looking to get out of it if you sold it? I’ve been wanting to replace my Fiero for some time now and an opponaught-owned MR2 would be just the thing.

Rant time:

Competitive? Fuck competitive. I mess with cars because it makes them fun and I do with them what I like. I’d rather have fun with a car and set it up for how I want it than set it up for how it needs to fit into an autocross class. I’ve never thought in terms of needing some kind of specific goal to justify wasting money on modifying a car. Whether you’re in a competitive autocross class or not, either way you’re wasting money on modifying a car.

If I go to an autocross I don’t give a shit what class I’m in or if I’m competitive. I’d rather have a car I enjoy and try to set a good time for the car. It’s not like winning your local autocross is the Indy 500, so who gives a shit if you win your class? Make a car you like. If someone ever tells me “oh no, you don’t want to do that to your car, IT’LL BUMP YOU INTO AN AUTOCROSS CLASS WHERE YOU WON’T BE COMPETITIVE,” my response is to do that thing to my car anyway. Because I want to.

If you like the car as is, keep it and keep working on improving your times, if you need to have some kind of goal in mind. But really, any other goal when we’re talking about wasting money on modifying a car is pointless. It’s all pointless fun anyway.

I’m currently looking for either an AW11 or an FB; if you do decide to sell it (though it sounds like you shouldn’t - unless you really find no more desire to drive it and have no further goals to build towards) let me know.

Keep it, modify it, run a “shits and giggles” autocross class that most regions run locally for guys who just want to compete for fun and run with anything without any pax or rules, and build the car for track days. Take it to some track days and see if your mind about the MR2 changes or stays the same.
