I got a CEL and noticed some dry white stuff on the firewall. My first thought was a coolant leak, but I had gone through some extremely light-colored mud earlier and the lines seemed to point to the tires. So, I mentioned this to the AZ guy, and he said, “Coolant isn’t white, though.”

He also told me I NEEDED to get a new knock sensor, when I actually just had to remove and readjust my gas cap.

Your oil isn’t black enough either.

Coolant may not be white, but if you don’t use distilled water and you live in an area with very hard water which you use to fill your radiator, it can leave white powder when it evaporates and leaves the minerals behind. I discovered this one as a young and inexperienced mechanic.

Do you have a smartphone? Do you have $20? You can do this yourself in the comfort of your home garage... All you need is an OBDII dongle and an app these days.

What code was it? Adjusting your gas cap will not fix a knock sensor code

Even if you do use distilled water to mix with your coolant, you can get white spots when it leaks and dries. My subaru has proof of that under the hood.

Not sure. It just gave a list of probable causes, including a bad knock sensor and low fuel pressure. I readjusted the cap and the CEL went off.
