Even finding one from delta is easy:

Even as a non plane enthusiast, I know that the one in the article is too big to be an A319. Is that a Boeing 747?

Yup. The 747 is the 2nd largest commercial passenger jet in operation right now behind an A380 and those two make up the entire double decker lineup. Meanwhile the A319 is about the size of a Boeing 737 which is one of the smallest “big” jets. Passenger difference is half if not less.

Wait, I get to fly on an A319 that’s being transported inside the cargo hold of a 747? Where do I sign up?!

I suppose I have to give the newspaper a bit of a break, since photos like the one you posted are © and they’d have to chase down permission. The papers have standing agreements with certain photo companies, and they just look for a picture of a Delta jet that they can use. It seems to be a bit of a grey area as to whether a media outlet could use a Creative Commons image, but there are 42 images of Delta 319s there.

There’s not really a grey area with CC images, it just depends on what the particular license is. A CC attribution license is fine (with attribution of course), but a CC non-commercial license would be out. I wouldn’t touch share alike for a commercial application either. The only one that is a bit iffy is no derivatives, as I don’t know if a simple resize creates derivatives with that (though even that is just a hole in my knowledge).

Regardless their 747 is an AP image, and I’d be very surprised if AP’s library didn’t have a 737 somewhere.

I spent about 2 minutes looking at the CC use guidelines, so you already know way more about it than I do.

Which is understandable for © images and whatnot, but (for example) the local rag here in the ‘Burgh runs the same image every time there’s an issue with the light rail system. Only thing is, the T’s were refitted, renumbered and repainted ten years ago, and the line shown was renamed. How hard could it possibly be to get one of their photogs or freelancers to go take a few shots of the modern trolleys?

I think a whole lot of journalism, at least at the local level, is done by somebody sitting at a desk using Wikipedia. Our network news sites here are incredibly lazy. Unfortunately, the public doesn’t demand better. Most folks couldn’t care less about the accuracy of a photo.

It says right there - “recently upgraded A319"

I’d say that 747 is a hell of an upgrade.

I figured there might be some copyright issues and prefered photographers. But I think even then it shouldn’t be too difficult. Then again, is it worth it for a throw away article with 5 lines about some new travel routes?
