On the left is a Boeing 727 that they flew in to Meigs Field and brought into the building. It’s built into the balcony now so you can go inside. Smells like an attic.

To its right is a Stuka being chased by a Spitfire. Behind it, a Boeing 40D mail carrier. Upside down at top is a Curtiss Jenny. All are real planes, not reproductions.

Kinja'd!!!

Bonus, Engine 999 that set a speed record in its day of about 112 mph, iirc

Too bad the place closed at 4:00. Wouldn’t have minded getting locked in “by accident “

Leave it to the Daleys to lock airplanes inside a building

Should we try to free them to their natural habitat? We can form a group

I’m really hoping to get there this year, been trying the last couple years but haven’t had time.

Did you do the submarine tour? If so is it worth the upcharge?

I love the Museum of Science and Industry. Top tip, avoid weekdays near Christmas. I suggest something more pleasant, like slamming your junk in a sliding glass door.

I used to live in Chicago and I always thought that museum was a big deal. Like 40 years ago... Or maybe 45...

Another one, if you’re ever in Munich, is the Deutsches Museum.

I didn’t I was t sure if it was wheelchair accessible, and I ran out of time before I got to that level. I didn’t pay attention to the hours and thought I had a hour left. At $16 for an adult online ticket, I thought it was worth it. I was alone so I got to read every plaque and display at my own pace without a child to pull my attention and rush me along.

Yeah I knew a Tuesday after Easter break would be a great time. Most of the people there were on field trips, just like I’d hoped. No crowds, and clean bathrooms.

Right on, I’ll definitely need to make it out there soon.

Thanks, I’ll remember that. I just regret I couldn’t get to the Field Musuem. So many childhood memories.

Yes definitely! If I recall, the tour is the only way to go inside, no unguided walk through. I think it was under $20 when I went a few years ago.

MSI was directly inspired by the Deutsches Museum. I need to go there.

Used to take field trips there back in the early 70s. All they had at the time (iirc) was the Spit. And the submarine, but it was outside. I went there with my wife 20 years ago, and it didn’t live up to my memories. We’re taking our boys to Chicago this summer, and we’ll definitely plan a day here.

Yes, it feels different when older, but still worth it.

Always fun to go back in time and see a plane with ash trays everywhere (though I have actually been on a somewhat recent United flight with refurbished seats that had them).

The strange thing to me about that museum is how little of the building they are using for public display space. Feels like less than half of the structure is actually accessible.

The uboat exhibit is definitely worth doing in general. There’s not so much inside the sub (it’s pretty tiny) but it is really damn cool:

The sub exhibit is a modern facility with ramps, but the sub itself is entered and exited via stairs (and the corridor through it is pretty narrow).

I helped supervise a field trip there shortly before Christmas break this year. We learned the hard way that that is the most popular time of year for field trips. There were about three or four times as many kids there as on a normal weekday. It was a freaking nightmare trying to get in and out of there. It took so long, I didn’t even get a chance to go see the sub :/

That’s what I figured. I remember going through one when I was little. It was probably this one.

I did the submarine tour a few years ago and it is definitely worth the upcharge. If you have any interest in mechanical things, history, engines, boats or anything remotely related to those subjects it is awesome.
