Kinja'd!!!

According to NADA, if my car was in rough condition I’d have to pay a dealer $350 to take it off my hands.

I could probs get $3500 for mine. Having driven to the moon doesn’t help the value much. All the valuation sites say it’s only worth about $2-2.5k.

I brought a few trades where the person was practically paying us to get rid of their car for them. $1000 over tissue on a new car and putting $250 on their 185k-mile Plymouth Laser RS with broken axles.

Meanwhile had they bought the car straight-up we probably would have sold it to them for $500-600 over tissue .

They were happy with the deal, so were we. Done.

If the USM doesn’t even feel the need to inspect your car, you might be in this scenario.

As I understand, there are actually cases where scrap value of a car is negative... in Europe, due to environmental disposal regulations increasing cost of scrapping a car to be higher than the value of the component parts and materials in some cases. (I’m not necessarily opposed to those regulations, although maybe scrapping costs should be paid up front in the purchase price of the vehicle.)

That’s just called “mark to market accounting.” LESS THAN NADA!

What I got mine for. Need to drop a grand in suspension and preventive maintenance but well worth it. Reason I got mine so cheap was because it wouldnt pass emissions in Virginia but in Ohio we dont worry about those things.

You usually get about €50-100 or so for a scrap car here. Or they take it off your hands free of charge if you can’t negotiate or have something uninteresting for parts recycling.

What a dealer owns the car for it’s a few dollars off of invoice.

Got 750 for the Honda, and you heard it screaming to be taken out back and shot quickly.

In your situation I would’ve done exactly what you did due to the lack of hassle. However let us assume for a moment you would’ve bought the BMW without trading in the Honda. What would that have done to the price of the BMW (larger discount?) and how much would you’ve gotten had you sold the Honda privately? Maybe with a new used power steering pump.

Indeed. A couple of years ago I sold my clean E39 for $4800, and it wasn’t even that desirable of an E39. It was just a 2000 528i auto/sport package car in beige with 118k on the clock.

Let’s not forget that I basically live at the end of the world. Hard to sell a non desirable car at the north end of a southbound island. I would have been sitting on it for months paying tax and insurance. Nobody comes to pick up a car like that with a trailer. So the first bidder would have gotten it. 50?

As for the BMW, having weird far away plates doesn’t help with bargaining. They know that you spent some money just to look at it.

I just set myself a goal that was reasonable for a one owner, BMW service history car, and they finally met me there.
