I’m not buying it.

After a lengthy test drive I was very impressed with the car, I’ve never driven a diesel before but I enjoyed the boatloads of torque down low and the feel of the 6-speed, but somehow when we got back a $21,000 car with an $8500 discount became a $594/mo lease payment over a two year term. It was like I was paying for the whole car in two years rather than leasing it. They also offered a purchase with 0% APR @ 72 months but that was only $5k off and the OTD was just too high.

Good work, stealerships! Once again losing the sale you already had by being dumb. Never change.

“but somehow when we got back a $21,000 car with an $8500 discount became a $594/mo lease payment”

What!? I could have leased my S3 for that much. Or you could just finance that car for 3 years and not have to give it back at the end, same price per month!

Shit. You could lease 2 Dodge Rams for that!

Or Silverados, or Fusions, or Rouges, or, or, or, or, or ....

$594/month over 2 years? That adds up to a bit over $14,000. So they’re basically saying that $21,000 car will only be worth about $7000 two years from now???

And is that $21,000 before or after the $8500 discount? If it’s before, then that deal is scam-level bad...

That’s so bad, I wonder if someone made a math or form entry mistake? Makes no sense.

What’s it with dealerships being stingy with VWs? I tried to contact a dealership about test driving a 2008 bug that I had plans of possibly buying and turning it into a herbie like clone. But they e-mailed me back saying the used car manager was planning on sending it to the auctions.

$21k before the discount. It’s a base Jetta TDI with no options

I brought it to the salesman’s attention that the math didn’t make sense, and he agreed but instead of questioning it himself, just suggested the purchase option.

a $21,000 car with an $8500 discount became a $594/mo lease payment over a two year term.

So you’d pay 594*24= $14256 to lease a 21000-8500= $12500 car? Either the seller is mistaken and quoted you the financing price, or it’s a scam.

I’d call him and let him know the OTD that you’re looking for, and note that you expect that to come with 0%/72mo. Then wait. An aged, brown, manual TDI? They aren’t selling that to anyone else, especially not with those comical offers. Or you could call another VW dealership and see if they can make a trade with this dealership...then never work with this joke of a dealer again.

It’s a VW TDI, do you really thing a lease company wants to gamble on the resale of it?

That makes sense with the lease, since they 100% don’t want the car back at the end so they’re gonna set a super low residual and you’ll basically have to buy it out. It’s the opposite of what Infiniti does, they set really high residuals and low payments so you have to lease another, VW is setting the payment high and residual low so you have to buy it out.

12.500 is a darn good buy. What could you buy for that money in Europe? A moderately well equipped Up or maybe a naked Polo.

Oh that’s a total ripoff then. It’s like them saying the car will be worth NEGATIVE $1500 in two years... which is bullshit.

Well, it is an older model with a horrible reputation (depreciation) and it’s been parked for a few years. Heavy discounts make sense. It’s a ‘2015 Jetta’ in Ami speak, so it’s not 2 but 3 years old.

Still a decent deal though. You could get an extremely low mileage not-naked Polo diesel of the same age. http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=242178016

Yeah but they’re basically saying that the thing will be worth NEGATIVE $1500 in two years... which is complete bullshit.

The $21,000 price is before the supposed $8500 discount... so they should actually be basing the leasing on a $12,500 dollar amount.

The monthly lease charge they are quoting is complete bullshit and is HEAVILY padded with either a ridiculously high interest rate or is heavily padded with extra charges.

You know... if there truly is an $8500 discount, that means the car should cost $12,500 plus tax... and let’s say the dollar amount is $15000 after fees and tax.

Take that dollar amount and see what it would cost you to get a bank loan where you would pay back over 2-3 years.

Over 2 years, the payment should be around $650/month... and then you own the car outright after.

Or over 3 years, the payment would be around $450/month.

I mean yeah, it’s not too sought after and a sitting car means some potential damage but iirc VW pledged to dealerships to pay for any damages on vehicles that have been sitting since September ‘15 and on.

My best friend owns a Polo similar to that but his is a 1.6 TDI. It’s quite good for a small car but I never got diesel engines in such small cars.

It’s a two year old car, the residual is already in the tank. Just because they are selling it new doesn’t mean it hasn’t already depreciated. On top of that it’s a retro fit Diesel Gate car.

All very true. But that still doesn’t explain how the dealer is basically saying that in the next 24 months, that car is going to go from being worth $12,500 to NEGATIVE $1500.

Hell... that kind of valuation didn’t even apply to crappy Daewoo cars after the company went bankrupt.

No.

After 2 years, even a retrofit dieselgate car will still be worth a few grand.

They really aren’t trying to sell him the car is really what I think the dealer was doing. I think they were trying to get him into a different vehicle and really is the 2017 would likely have better corporate incentives anyway.
