You may find this video disturbing. A 4-year-old Arkansas girl fell out of the back door of a moving church bus, and the accident was caught on the dash cam of a volunteer firefighter who happened to be following the bus. The girl suffered a broken jaw, facial lacerations, and a concussion, but she is expected to make a full recovery. The driver of the bus, the church’s pastor, turned around and returned to the scene when the other kids started screaming. He was not charged.

He addressed that in an interview. He said that he didn’t want to move her, but she was moving herself, and reaching up to be held. I imagine his paternal instincts took over. Kind of hard for a 4yo to understand that she needs to lie still.

Nope.
Possible head trauma means to avoid moving the person without the proper equipment and avoid any neck movement. That’s why C-collars are used in situations like this.

Bus load of kids, lots of yelling, took time to figure out what was happening. I would think that a modern bus would have a warning light indicating to the driver that the back door was open. Still, it was probably pretty chaotic. Or he was on the phone.

That’s the crappy part, they would have to grandfather them in, which means some organizations would keep older buses on the road longer. It just infuriates me that we force automakers to add all sorts of little shit to cars to drive up prices but for the most part buses are using the same interiors for like 30 years.

School buses, in particular, are like commercial airplanes. If you look at the statistics, you will see that they are one of the safest ways to travel. It’s just that when one does crash, it’s a horror show.
