I have made this mistake. I had to rectify it a week later

My car uses a crush washer which is recommended to be replaced every oil change. That seems to help me remember.

I believe most of us made that mistake once. Once.

Back it out a little bit, then wrap some bare solid core copper wire around it in a flat kinda washer like shape. Tighten it up. I’ve used that in a pinch and it usually doesn’t leak.

hate that...

My biggest oil change oopsie was taking my wife’s old Nissan around the block to make sure everything was fine after changing the oil - but before putting the oil filler cap back on the top. It sprayed oil all over...

I changed the oil on my car day before yesterday.

Why was there a metal washer in your pan?

Oh... you forgot to put the washer back on the oil drain plug.

It’ll probably be okay...

And funnily enough, I had a small leak coming from oil drain plug as well... but I thing it was caused by some crud build up that I should have cleaned off during the last oil change, but didn’t.

Cleaned it this time and watching for leaks now.

If it starts leaking I’ll try it

Shop vac and a rag. Put the rag over the vac hose and create a tight seal to the oil filler. Turn the vac on and remove the plug. The suction should hold the oil in.

That’s not so bad.

1. Unscrew the drain bolt most of the way with your dominate hand (making sure you have a crush washer close at hand).

2. Finish unscrewing the drain plug with your dominate hand

3. Very Quickly plug the drain hole with the thumb or palm of your other hand

4. With dominate hand put the washer on the drain plug bolt

5. Quickly make the switch inserting the drain plug bolt back in

6. Celebrate (with or without) your beverage of choice

Or: just leave it unless it starts leaking
