Full disclosure: I’m not an atheist, it’s just that that sort of comment really rubs me the wrong way.
Interestingly, it was a while before anyone actually objected to my comment. The first person to object came on pretty strong, but to their total credit, were actually very civil when I explained my motivations:

Now, for whatever reason, the grays have found me so there’s lots of bitchiness and name calling.

I think that partially went wrong somewhere. Many people thought of your comment as atheistic. Personal feelings aside, I think the theme here was criticising these people for hiding behind God whilst they directly benefited from a dubious situation. Unless now I’m reading that all wrong...

Is there something wrong with being atheist? I’m an atheist, but there’s no reason to put “full disclosure” on that statement as if it’s something worth hiding.

Nope. You nailed it. Like, if that lady had said something like “Even this person who is suffering from cancer found it in his heart to donate his car to help others, as a good Christian” I wouldn’t have thought anything about it. But that comment just comes off as incredibly callous and self-centered. “I prayed to God and he answered my prayers by delivering to me a terminally ill man with a sweet car.”
Ironically, you got it much worse than I did in that thread, but from the other side.

My most popular post on Kinja is either the article I wrote in 2013 about FW1 (in terms of views and comments that I get to this day) or a comment I made a couple years ago about the Camaro having gun-slit windows in a QOTD. I think that one got either 450-500...something like that.
My second most popular post was this one that I wrote a few days ago . It definitely took 1,000,000% more effort than the Camaro joke, and attracted more burners too.

Nope, not at all. I said “full disclosure,” because I thought that the comment would naturally be interpreted as coming from an atheist. Certainly that is how it was perceived by the majority of the negative responses that I received to it.
I also just wanted to preemptively defuse the comment in case there were any Oppos who would personally take offense and interpret it as belittling religion. I’m not fond of belittling religion, just assholes who happen to be religious.

Ah, I just think it’s kind of sad that we need to beat around the bush at our personal choice to not believe in an organized religion because it will provoke negative responses.
Everyone should be able to proudly declare their religion or non-religion as loudly and backlash-free as Christians.

Danke! :D I have a passion for writing and research (it comes in a close second to technology), so honestly I take any chance I can get to educate, inform, and hopefully normalize. :)
And, I’m often wrong about many things, which only fuels my fire to research more. The dissenting opinions from that thread have me doing just that...and I’m coming up empty-handed.

I totally agree. I think it’s ridiculous that anyone would take offense at someone being an atheist or anything else. It’s that sort of tribal “us versus them” mentality that I think frequently makes religion a force for bad. It’s no different than beating a guy up in the parking lot after a football game for wearing the other team’s jersey, except people usually think that they’re even more justified in doing it.

Well just tread lightly any time you disagree with the author’s or other regular commentator’s view.
I’ve found that Jezzies don’t handle disagreement well... though you will have an advantage given you identify as female.
With a name like ‘Manwich’, I get the sense that I’m treated with contempt by some even before I’ve said anything... LOL.
