Engineers: Great at calculus, horrible at simple math

Per David Tracy, the Raptor is “miserable” because of some fairly stupid reasons, paramount among which is his commentary on the mileage while towing:

My results over about 1,700 miles: 9.4 MPG.

Clean off your glasses and brighten the screen all you want, but that really does say 9.4 MPG. It’s a pathetic figure that made driving this truck on the highway genuinely miserable. Even though the ride was actually really quiet and smooth, having to fill up that 36-gallon tank every 350 miles pained my heart and pocketbook.

1,700 miles at 9.4 MPG: 180 gallons @ $2.42 (nat’l average) = $437 of gas. 5 stops for gas.

1,700 miles at 12 MPG: 141 gallons @ $2.42 (nat’l average) = $342 of gas. 4 stops for gas.

Delta: $95, one extra stop. Is that what misery is for a guy who has probably ingested more brake fluid in the past month than a Cuban mechanic does in a year?

Engineers: great with calculus, horrible with very simple math that unravels silly anecdotes.

Didn’t the Raptor adopt the EcoBoost turbo v6 to improve fuel economy?

fueleconomy.gov says

6.2l v8 is rated at 13-16mpg

3.5l v6 is rated at 15-18mpg.

Ostensibly, yes it was in the name of power + fuel efficiency, but the reality is that the switch was made to satisfy CAFE and provide marketing fluff, both of which it has done flawlessly.

Everything I’ve heard about those trucks is that they’re calibrated to feel like V8s and have great passing power so people think they’re fast. Ford may have passed up the benefits of the drivetrain in the name of butt feel and marketing. His point is valid

$437 > $342

Therefore, 12 MPG is better for fuel economy and cheaper than 9.4 MPG. Because, science.

10 while towing(even with it mostly empty) is not really that bad. We got around that in our 2014 Toyota Tundra Platinum with a FJ40 on the back. Granted it was like having a heavy barn door on the back but nonetheless.

Its an engine platform that Ford has invested in, saying it is less thirsty then the V8's they are replacing when in fact they are not. Its a valid observation.

Towing is where a diesel or larger V8 makes so much more sense. The engine doesn’t have to work very hard to pull that extra 3,000 pounds of trailer and rust heap. Unladen highway crusing I typically get 17-20 in an F350 with the 6.7L turbo diesel. I would imagine 15-17 if towing a car trailer+shit heap. You also wouldn’t even notice that you were towing anything with the F350 it has so much power.

That’s not at all what he’s saying. He’s saying that that relatively  marginal difference in laden fuel mileage makes it a miserable vehicle to drive.

From a financial or time cost the numbers just don’t support that observation.

$115 delta

Got it wrong again: 180gal of regular fuel = $437. Compare this to 141gal of premium fuel = $413. A delta of $24 dollars. That 12MPG number is also pulled out of a hat.

I didn’t get read the article either. Does he make a claim that towing should still mean the truck gets the same MPG? towing anything will have increased weight unless the laws of nature math etc have changed.

I also agree 1+1=11 and it also equals 2. :P
