Most NA Miata’s around here seem to be around $3000-5000.

It’s almost always off on anything older than 15 years or with any semblance of collectibility .

any valuation is going to be off and not as accurate for older cars, since cars in that price range, the lowest segment, under $3000, the price is much more driven by condition rather than what kind of car it is.

I find a lot of valuations to be a bit off, especially as the car gets older. Probably a lack of data as they enter the realm of being mostly private sale. KBB lists first generation MINIs as being worth about half of what they actually go for.

You can’t go by book value anymore after 15+ years. At that point it’s all about service history, condition, rarity, and desirability. I bought my for $3,750 which some might say is too high for a ‘90. But everything was done to it 2,000 miles before I bought it. Timing belt, water pump, clutch, coolant flush, radiator and hoses, plugs and wires, and a shit load of misc. seals and gaskets. When you buy an NA Miata, you really want to “overpay” for a well maintained one.

Yeah, there’s no finding an “Outstanding” NA for $1600.

KBB excessively devalues older cars with mileage. A 10 year old car with 100,000 miles will be valued low for “excessive” mileage. It is silly.

Plus when a car gets to double-digit age, a few 10s of thousands of miles should be pretty inconsequential: what should matter more is how the car was maintained and driven for those miles. Care and condition should matter more to value than the odometer reading (within reason).

Once the car has been driven enough that bigger dollar maintenance items have been replaced (clutch, timing belt, plugs, coolant, brakes, shocks, accessories, etc.), then its value should actually be higher than one with a few less miles that is on all original (worn out) parts. But you’ll never convince the “books” to account for that.

Go price an FJ80 there, and then go offer that to someone who owns one. Be prepared to perform CPR so that they don’t die laughing.

Man, I want me an old person who looks at that price and sticks the car in their lawn with a for sales sign without checking craigslist.

KBB said the dealer trade in was from $50-$500 or somesuch on my Dakota. I said they could go fuck themselves.
