calling all tires experts
I have a set of 16x8.5 coming in. I need a new set of tires, 200 treadwear
2 sizes are available for my application are 225 50 16 ($400) vs 245 45 16 ($750)
lets say the car has 400hp / 2500 lbs, weekend fun car
I am leaning towards the 225s ... thoughts ?

I’d say 245. Smaller diameter, a little wider, a little shorter sidewall. I guess it depends on the car.

225's will look a bit stretched on a 8.5" wide wheel. But that is a big price difference. Do they HAVE to have a 200 treadwear rating?

245
225 is a bit small on a 8.5 wide wheel. I have a staggered set of 7.5 and 8.5 and I run a 255 in the rear. If you have 400hp and only 25oolbs, I would definitely opt for the larger patch. Here’s what it actually looks like.

Why would they look stretched?
225mm is 8.858" which would leave just under 3/16" extra tire on each side of the rim.
245mm is 9.645"
I’d go with 245s if they wont cause any rubbing issues, but I don’t see how 225 are small for the rim.

and yes the price difference is huge, and there are so much more available tire options for the 225 thats why I am considering the 225s ...
if they are only off $50 i’d be a no brainer

Depends on the tire construction as well. If you are comparing the same brands/models then you can get a better idea of the width, but most tires have a rounded shoulder.
The width of the bead is the important part. if you put a 8.5 inch wide tire on a 8.5 inch wide wheel and the section and tread widths are the same it’ll fit nicer but with a 225 tire you’re probably looking at somewhere around 8.0 inches in tread width. Plus most 225 tires I looked up quickly recommend a wheel no wider than 8.0 inches.
For reference I am running 215's on a 7.5inch rim and they look a little stretched, the wheel is meant for a 225.

I’m with you. 225s on a 8.5" wheel will certainly look stretched.
As an aside, BFGoodrich lists the wheel size range for 225/50/16 as 6"-8".
GM put 225/60/16s on 6.5" wheels on all the W-bodies.

after shipping and install its pretty much right at the $750 mark, which is in line with my 245 option.

I don’t know if I missed the price or if you added it after I commented, but if you’re set on those tires, I’d go with the 225s.
But, if you want my $.02, I highly recommend the Dunlop Direzza DZ102s. I run them on my 2002 and on my 330i. They perform great at autox, on the road, and in the rain. The best part? The treadwear is over 400.

Depends on what that “fun” entails for you.
If you’re just looking for some modestly-spirited driving around town with responsible applications of the throttle, you’ll probably get by just fine with 225s. For anything beyond that though, my autocross-biased sensibilities are screaming for 245s, because I’m already regularly playing around at the limit of 200TW 245s with a car of similar weight having about half as much power.

the price was there. and the $300 difference is what makes the decision so difficult.
I had dz101 maybe 10 years back didnt like them too much. maybe i’ll give the dz102 another look
