“In those days gas stations didn’t exist. Murdock had to write letters to shop keepers along his planed route in advance to “order” gas from local hardware stores...With all that Jacob still managed to set a time of 32 days 5 hours and 22 minutes.” I love the human race’s desire to be the first, fastest or best at something. Jacob M. Murdock’s full story here and here .

I feel like there’s some interesting context in relation to electric vehicles, too - sure, right now, a cross-country trip is difficult, but it’s nowhere near that difficult even in a LEAF with bad battery degradation, and that situation improved massively, who’s to say that the electric situation won’t improve massively?

It’s interesting, there are some remote places in the world that have no regular gasoline supply, but do have electricity, but also plenty of remote places that have no electricity, but do have gasoline (or diesel) readily available. At what point do people who live in a “dying” small town that has lost its gas station switch to an electric car for ease of re-”fueling”?

It’s going to be a very long time before an electric passenger car can:

1. go as far on one charge/tank as a car using hydrocarbons

2. recharge as fast as a car can refuel+

But it will be interesting to watch.

For #1, it depends on the hydrocarbon-fueled car.

I’d consider a Model S P100D to be a comparable car to a Charger Hellcat in terms of performance, and the P100DL has longer range.

For #2, though, absolutely, that’s a factor.
