I knew 7:43.80 is a good ring time, so I looked at other ring times.

Cars that it’s quicker then:

- Pagani Zonda C12 S (2002)

- Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI (2009)

- C63 AMG Coupe Black Series (2011)

Wow, if that is correct, that is pretty impressive to beat a Zonda and a R8 (with the V10 none the less). Zonda time is probably limited by tires from 15 years ago

I never thought of the tires, good point. It’s only 1 second slower then the C6 Z06.

Yea I’m too lazy to look it up but the Honda probably has really good tires. Tire tech wasn’t the same 15 years ago. I’d be interesting to see what an old Zonda could do now.

Details ...

Honda set the lap time with what they call a “pre-production model that was technically representative of production specification.” A floating roll cage was added for safety reasons, but Honda claims that the cage did not improve the rigidity of the frame. In order to compensate for the extra weight of the roll cage, Honda removed the rear seats and display audio system. The record-setting Type R was also outfitted with street-legal track focused tires. Honda declined to specify the actual tires used.

If anything, it’s mostly up to running something like a Pilot Sport Cup or similar. Same as how the Giulia QF posted such a good time.

The GTI Clubsport also used very aggressive tires.

Ok, my point is that some cars set surprisingly good ‘ring times because they’re running sorta-cheater tires. The Giulia QF actually comes standard with those tires but I’d expect most of its owners to not buy a similarly aggressive tire when they wear out after 10-15k miles. Honda didn’t specify the tire they used to set the time so we’ll have to see what the factory tires end up being. Not many people are going to DD a car on almost-R compound tires.
