It’s not even resentment of success, because he hasn’t really had any. I know the guy can score, but mostly it’s just hanging around the left dot and one-timing it... dunno.

Put it this way, I don’t like to see guys get hurt. I like the hits, love the hard crunches, but I don’t like seeing guys stay down. But I actually celebrated when Ovi got bulldozed by Kadri the other night. And was mad that he didn’t hit him hard enough to push him out of the game entirely.

I grew up in DC and am generally a DC sports fan, except I can’t be bothered to pay attention to baseball or hockey. Mostly my fandom consists of suffering through never-ending Skins idiocy and Wizards mediocrity. I’ve been working on paying less attention to the NFL in general and Skins in particular because I refuse to devote any mental energy to Dan Snyder and the NFL takes itself way too seriously. I’m pretty sure DC managed to become a hockey town based on all their other teams sucking for so long. But I’m still not going to pay attention.

That’s his biggest drawback, because his reputation means that he will almost never draw penalties now. Two seasons ago, they would still call penalties done against Kadri, but after last year, no dice.

So long as he can put up with the resulting fights from bulldozing players (Matthew Tkachuk comes immediately to mind as someone who needs a good bulldozing), he’s a keeper.

That and usually they call stuff against him that shouldn’t be called. That hit on Ovi, as hard as it was, was clean. That was a complete bogus tripping penalty. For the record I think the Polak hit was clean too, and they had their similarities. Both of them ended up hitting one leg instead of hitting solidly which made them more ugly than they should have been. And the embellishment call later in the game? I’ll admit that it looked like a blatant dive at first, I thought he deserved it... but the replay doesn’t lie, he did get a “charlie horse” slash. Just not from Ovi.

But it’s Kadri, he’s made his bed. I just hope for the team’s sake he doesn’t have to lie in it too often.

I mean his CF% and oZS% are above 50% so he has to be contributing more than just his slapshot (also probably why he’s on the wing instead of center). One thing I have noticed with Ovi is that he’s not afraid to go for the big hit where I can’t think of any time where Crosby was the one smearing someone all over the ice.

I would say he’s more of a one way player than Crosby is but at the same time Crosby is probably around 3rd or 4th defensively.

The Ovi hit wasn’t anything more egregious than say, what Brad Marchand normally does to people. I mean, if anything, Marchand is worse from a “propensity to do checks like that” than Kadri could ever dream to be.

The Polak hit? Same thing.

The officials still haven’t found the balance between not calling borderline infractions (or where they aren’t sure there was an infraction) and calling things because “he must have done something” and trying to find something to justify the stoppage and penalty call.

The Kadri tripping penalty was a “he must have done something”. Some of the behind the play crosschecks and interferences in a few of the series haven’t been called and boiled over into something more serious (e.g. Vesey vs. Pacioretty in the final Rangers-Habs game).
