This is only the first round. In a multi party system xenophobic populists might become the #1 party, they don’t even get close to 50% of the votes. Well, except in the US.
Things are bad in France but there’s no way Le Pen will be president.
Similar thing here in the Netherlands. Our xenophobic populist (Wilders) became number #2... with 13% of the votes, if I recall correctly.

I don’t trust anyone to elect a sensible choice anymore. First it was Breakfast then Donald Drumpf, The Netherlands had their shit together and didn’t elect a moron, now be ready for absolute insanity with the French and British elections. I want to believe that decent human beings can still be elected but I’m not seeing it happen.

It could have been worse. It could have been Le Pen v Mélenchon in round 2.
Macron is at least half way sensible, albeit of little experience. Fillon would have been better, but l’Affaire Penelope finished him off.

Le Pen came second and had about 21% in the exit polls if I recall correctly. Barely surpassing number 3 and 4 at 19.5% each. She’ll be going to round two, but you can be quite sure the vast majority who didn’t vote for Le Pen this time won’t vote for her in the second round either. She’s way too polarizing to win over many swing voters.
That, at least, is what I suspect.
