No temp gauge? I mean, it makes sense, after all it only costs $20k+ new.

My biggest pet peeve about the NV200 though... See the little orange info square with the odometer? Well, if any of your tires are low (or if the TPMS system malfunctions), the TPMS system takes over the entire square with a cycling “Check Tire Pressure” message that can’t be cleared. Meaning you can’t see the odometer, no matter what you do. That’s not inconvenient in a work vehicle where you log mileage, or need the mileage reading to use a fuel card, etc.

Almost 200k miles? What year is that thing? Can’t be older than a 14

My Juke has one.

It is in the middle screen on the left.

“No matter what you do”? So it doesn’t even let you cycle through whatever other information the screen has to offer by pressing the button? What a stupid design.

That is correct. Nothing you do can get rid of the message. Well, except putting air in the tires, but if it’s the system that’s messed up the message won’t go away. Nissan makes their TPMS sensors out of corrosion, so it’s a frequent problem.

Yep, and the cheaper Versa Notes have them too. There’s no excuse for not having gauges on a vehicle designed to be used for work.

2013. The other one I have left in my fleet is around 180k, too.

So, I’ve never had a vehicle with TPMS (get off my lawn.) What’s the tolerance? Does just being off by a couple PSI trigger it? Or are they just super failure-prone?

Kinja'd!!! "fhrblig" (fhrblig)
04/23/2017 at 13:47, STARS: 0

In most of them it seems to be about 5-10 PSI depending on the vehicle. The bigger vans seem to have more leeway (they’re typically set up as 50 psi front and 80 psi rear). I call them ‘cold weather warning lights’, because a large temperature change from warm to cold will make them activate.

At least in my truck I can dismiss the DIC message even if the cluster light stays on. Not being able to dismiss the message just seems like a dumb coding decision.

Side note: that cluster wouldn’t look out of place in an early 90s subcompact shitbox. That is truly awful.

Huh. I guess that’s reasonable. ...unlike not being able to access other information on that screen . I don’t even drive one, and I’m getting pissed off just thinking about it.

My old 2009 Accent didn’t have one, either. I think the manual said something would light up if it got too hot, but I’ve never seen that light so that could be a lie.

Yeah, all the big Nissans don’t have that problem. Their TPMS is way better integrated, and gives a real time readout of tire pressure for each individual tire (provided the sensor hasn’t failed). And none of the Chevy, Ford or Ram systems are that intrusive either.

You could do it in a big NV, those don’t have the same problem.

What bothers me most is that rev gauge. Bullshit, no way you can get that thing to rev to 8k.

No temp gauge? Good. Overheat and die you worthless, lying, shitfaced van.

Silverado will send you a DIC message. Silverado don’t care if you want it or not. Silverado knows when you say no, you mean yes.

None here either. I thought that I’d miss it since I prefer something more like this:

But if it comes down to it, I can always fire up DashCommand on the phone and monitor just about every parameter I can think of:

Kinja'd!!!

Still, the things that you’re experiencing on that Nissan are just stupid.

There are times when having too much information can be a problem. Back in the ‘70s my mother kept taking her VW Dasher back to the shop complaining about the temp reading. Their solution? Put a resistor in line to the gauge to get it to read lower. Problem solved...

Most cars don’t have temp gauges any more. It’s not like most drivers bother looking at them... and then they do and freak out cause it moved a hair back and forth. (True story, one of the bell staff at the resort I worked at complained about a spiking temp gauge, I drove the van around for a half hour and noticed nothing before coming back for an explanation.)

Yeah, most passenger cars don’t. These are supposed to be for work, though. Work vehicles should have a full set of gauges. Fords do. Chevy’s do. Rams do. The Nissan Nv1500-2500's do.

I won’t argue with that, but somehow Chevy, Ford, and Ram all seem to be able to make TPMS systems that work as intended.

That’s just it, fleet vehicles DO usually have that stuff. All of my other vehicles (including Versa Notes) have those gauges.

04/23/2017 at 23:16, STARS: 0

The implication is that my above logic should still hold. Whether or not it should have a temperature gauge or not is irrelevant. 95% of fleet vehicles are driven until they stop working, regardless of what gauges come standard. Although yes, it does surprise me that they include the tach without including a temp gauge.

In my case, a temp gauge has been invaluable. Literally every other brand has them, and Nissan themselves have put temp gauges in cheaper vehicles like the Versa Note. What really chaps my ass is that the big NV has TWO TEMP GAUGES. They have the standard analog gauge, and then a second digital temp gauge in the info cluster.

Base spec Micra I drove when I was delivering for a parts store didn’t have a temp gauge either. Also the digital fuel gauge was useless. Unilaterally any fleet I’ve driven for the vehicles’ needs go largely ignored. I started with another location three weeks ago and of the six vehicles I’ve driven there so far only one hasn’t been several thousand km past the “next service interval” sticker, and that one was new with only 2000km on it. And we’re forced to look at the odometer every time we get fuel as well. The long and short is that 95% of drivers don’t give a shit because it’s not their car. Nissan’s exploiting this fact to be cheap. Big deal.

You’re in the 5% who care. Good for you. I expect most Oppos are and would be disapointed if they weren’t. Tragically though the 95% is the market that gets targetted.

I could forgive a Micra for not having a full set of gauges. A work vehicle should have them.

And again, what should or shouldn’t be is irrelevant when for the most part they will be ignored.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. When your vehicle is your office and you put upwards of 60-80k on it per year, you tend to be way more aware of gauges.

How does this work? Is it sealed off and you just air up the tube to a certain pressure so all read that same? Looks interesting. (I don’t know the intricacies of TPMS; I just recently got a vehicle that uses it.)
