I was on my way to breakfast (I had eggs benedict, it was fucking delicious) and as a car passed me by I heard this tremendous pop. It was like a gunshot, but I saw an old Focus sedan (early 2000s model) smoking out the exhaust and slow down. It was still moving slowly as I lost sight of it, but I couldn’t tell if it was smoke or the dust on the side of the road from him trying to pull over.
I lost interest since I was really hungry and wanted some breakfast. Now that I’m full, I’m curious again. What the hell happens to a car that it sounds like gunfire? Do engine misfires sound like this?

You won’t generally hear a misfire, you can usually feel it in the vibration of the engine. A backfire you would definitely hear, or catastrophic engine failure.

I’ve seen so many of those on Craigslist with engine that have gone out or blown a gasket.

CVHs eat valve seats. Ask me how I know....

Sounds like it was a 2000-2004 base model with the 2.0L SPI (Split Port Injection) engine. Those are notorious for dropping valve seats.
