The Manual Transmission

Kinja'd!!!

High Powered engines (anything with more than 4 cylinders and/or forced induction)

Kinja'd!!!

Cars with less than 4 doors.

You can pick one of these but the other two will be DESTROYED. What do you choose, oppo?

Keep the manual. My four door four cylinder will be unstoppable.

Limiting us to NA 4 cylinders is pretty harsh. Can I have an NA 6 so I can keep the manual??

At my stage of life, I don’t even care about the 2 doors anymore. :/

Most of the fun cars are 2 doors!

What good is a manual V8 if you’re stuck in a 4000lb land barge?

Actually, I take it back. I’d be cool with a NA manual-2 door.

If you’re picking a coupe, you’re destroying the manual as well as the giant engines.

I’m holding out for an I6, but if it’s 4 cylinders this has to be the correct answer —

Keep the manual. Just because those others are destroyed doesn’t mean we can’t make more.

I’ll take the manual transmission. More fun to drive if it’s a manual, especially with slow cars.

Manuals are outclassed by autos now anyway. Paddle shifters are good enough for me.

Coupes are the rolling compromise of automotive bodystyles.

I’ll keep my high powered motor attached to a quick shifting auto in a big sedan pls.

Manual Transmission.

I’m fine with the idea of a 4 door Mustang with the 4 cyl ecoboost being the top engine.

You’re right. I started with destroying 2, but then got distracted and destroyed 1.

I’ll keep the 2-doors.

Honestly, I think I’d rather drive a manual 3 hatch than an auto Miata. If this was the edict, I’m sure Honda, Mazda & Porsche could come up with some small high-revving four doors that would be a blast to flog around.

I’m going to look at this another way - if I don’t pick something, all three will be destroyed, and I can only save one. All three of these are on the brink of destruction.

The electric future is going to kill manuals anyway - sure, you can make an electric with a manual, but it’s stupid. And, even hybridization doesn’t work well with manuals. It’s worth saving, but we can’t save it.

High-powered engines... well. The way you defined it - “anything with more than 4 cylinders and/or forced induction” means that sufficiently large 4-cylinders are an option, as are Wankels (as Rustholes-Are-Weight-Reduction noted), turbines, and just big ol’ batteries and electric motors. And, it only takes about 200 horsepower to move a semi at 65 mph on level ground. Make a 200 hp 4-cylinder to act as a range extender (which is well within the range of normal - like, so normal that beige base model Camrys within a few months will have them - 4-cylinders, although you’d want more displacement, a balance shaft to try to quell the vibrations, and lower RPM, for that application), use electric assistance, and you’ve basically got every land vehicle demand, outside of locomotives (which could just be electrified...) covered. For air vehicles, piston engines are usually flat-4s or flat-6s, so I guess you’re stuck with 4s there. Still, you weren’t restricting displacement, so add a gear reduction to that ~5 liter flat-4 in your Cessna, and make it rev higher. Basically, through loophole abuse, it’s not worth saving.

Cars with less than 4 doors? That’s something that we can save, and is worth saving.

High powered engines. You could do extended cab suicide doors like the rx8, automated manuals, but there is no replacement for displacement.

Normally I wouldn’t do this. But keep the high powered engines. I am okay with the Cadillac CTS-V or Ferrari FF (it should be 4 doors) transmissions because their paddleshift-ness still makes you feel connected to the car. Also the day we lose engines in cars like the Nissan 370Z and Dodge Viper is when cars as we know them are done. :P
