Kinja'd!!!

This is more representative of the hate I feel towards the 90's retro movement more than anything but this car, more than any other, encapsulates this hate for me. I don’t actually hate very many cars so this week will be hard but this one was easy.

No, I don’t care it could be had with a 400 hp V8 and a 6 speed manual. It could have come with exhausts that convert smog into skittles...I would still hate this turd. Its a turd on the outside, its a turd on the inside, its based on a platform that was abandoned after a single generation. It was a sales flop and closed the plant it was made in because they had a years stock and didn’t know what to do with them.

This is a lesson of what not to do that will stand the test of time.

I hate that this is the closest we’ve got to the Aussie ute.

I think this was all around the time we had the PT Cruiser, Ford Thunderbird, and HHR all going for that niche “retro” styling that somehow worked for the PT. They’re all silly.

I kind of like it with the LS2 and the six speed.

Fun fact, Mexicans for some reason think of this as an exotic/rare vehicle and are paying close to 25k USD for imported models. Some of them I’m 100% sure with salvage title.

I like that they built a concept vehicle. Terrible, but an effort was made.

Just kinda crazy.

I like this simply because they tried to be different. Its less cynical than the current trend of making things offensively ugly to stand out. Looking at you Toyota CHR.

It sucked at everything it was supposed to be but I like it more than the Thunderbird and Prowler of that era. Can you really hate a ute that much?

Saw a yellow one driving the opposite way on the street a few days ago, all my wife said was (very strongly), “Oh no, oh holy fuck no! Why?” Made me both laugh, and love her a little more.

Not so much “hate”, as a genuine sadness on how blind folks were in being lead to believe that this was thing was “cool”.

I always loved that in the 2005 dystopian film The Island, they imagined that in the year 2019 Steve Buscemi (playing a janitor) would be driving a hot rodded SSR.

I like the idea of doing something odd and different and I applaud Chevy for that. Part of me even like the absurd concept they went with, “Let’s make a low, powerful, convertible pickup that’s terrible at being a pickup!” The execution and end product though...

Also what if the exhaust spat out peanut m&m’s?

Yes. It has zero ute. Max tow of 2500 and a carpeted/boxed bed.

It pains me that they took a ‘59 El Camino, which are really hard to find in good shape, and made it as useless as an SSR. I mean great execution on the end product- it looks well built. But an El Camino you can’t haul anything in? No. Just no.

You could pick any of the half baked retro cars from this era, and I can’t argue with you. I hate this one slightly less because V8 manual, but it was half baked, too. Only positive thing I can say about those retro messes was that maybe they led to the current gen pony cars which are greatly improved?

You hate this because it is peak baby boomer. They were passionate about the PT Cruiser, for example, because it embodies their essence - an obsession with the dreams of their youth, an obsession with appearances (which matter more than substance - this car flopping while the PT sold like crazy proves this point, although this was also a turd in every form), and a selfishness that permeates everything. The retro styling fad happened right as they were hitting their peak midlife crisis stage and these were greenlighted by boomers that drove their development and claimed they would be popular. They didn’t even care if it worked, because it stroked their collective egos.

In the rest of Europe as well. Just like Honda and Mitsubishi. At least Mazda builds halfway decent cars and I see quite a fair share of Nissan Qashqais.

the GMT360 which these are based off can do some decent towing too (7k). A GMT360 El Camino with an Atlas would’ve been BAMF. probably give up some tow rating thanks to the suspension, but toss in a rhinolined bed and boom. Project lotus towpig.

Would buy now in 2017.

I have always had a thing for GMT360 suvs, especially for the homly Olds Bravada.

An inline 6 El Camino would be badass, but GM doesn’t have the balls.

And an interesting counterpoint to the suckitude of the retro movement is the Miata, the first product of the retro movement that made it out of Japan - extremely good at its mission, to the point that it’s now entirely distanced itself from the retro styling of its previous generations, and successfully stands on its own.

Was it retro styled though? or just Retro concept. I mean it was more a homage than retro.

04/27/2017 at 11:42, STARS: 0

Styling was basically directly taken from the 1960s Lotus Elan.

That said, in role, it was more of a homage to the MG B than the Elan - much heavier, more modest power.
