Need to top off the coolant in my wife’s car. However, it was last serviced at the car lot we bought it from, and I have no idea if I’m looking at Dexcool orange or Toyota pink. What say you?

It LOOKS pink but after looking up online photos hmmm....

When in doubt, flush it out?

I kind of agree with flushing the system if you can’t figure it out. Deathcool can be murder. Although I wonder what they were filled with from the factory. Any way to figure out what it left the factory with?

The owner’s manual calls for dexcool but most people on the forums think it’s a misprint by GM because they think it actually left the factory with Toyota pink.

However, this car is 9 years old and had the radiator replaced 2 years ago... so who knows what’s in it now.

DexCool is decidedly orange (source: my ‘96 Corvette uses DexCool...the ‘90 one uses generic green). If this is decidedly pink, as it looks to be, it’s not DexCool. Pour some out into a white cap to find out, since I know those barely translucent reservoirs can skew colors. Could also try mixing what you pour out with Toyota pink to see what happens.

Honestly, though, this looks closer to FCA HOATS stuff than DexCool.

I imagine if it was replaced they probably went with the Toyota product. Think about it, this obviously wasn’t done at a Pontiac dealer. So whoever did it I’m sure just used Toyota parts and filled it ( I assume) with Toyota pink.

Side note: any way you can get a little bit of the current coolant out of the reservoir and put it on to a paper plate or something? So you could get a better idea of the color?

I’ve had a similar issue with an older GM truck. I used a white paper towel to get a sample to check Color rather than try to guess by looking at the side of a very old plastic reservoir.

Can you get an eye-dropper or pipette and pull some fluid out of the expansion tank for a closer look?

Poke a paper towel into the fluid and see what color it turns.

Toyota pink I say.. better test it with a paper towel as recommended though- Someone once mixed coolant in my wife’s mkii Jetta. It was not happy.

IMO, that’s pink.

Maybe get a short length of clear hose and stick it into the res, then cover the hose with your finger and pull the hose up.

I’d put money on ‘Yota pink. But I’d just top off with some green prestone shit, because why not.

Supposedly Peak coolant is compatible with any coolant so just use that? I dunno that’s what the bottle says...

Get some out (a $1 wal-mart turkey baster works well for this sort of thing) and put it in a glass. Add whatever you think to the glass. If it doesn’t turn into jelly or whatever, you’re probably good to go.

That’s what I used in my Jetta for years. No special VW stuff, just Peak 50/50 from walmart. Never overheated on me.
