A 5L jug of Castrol Syntec fits the rear trunk cubby hole nicely in the F30's trunk.
And I got kicked out of the Bimmer shop (figuratively)... they say my maintenance schedule I came up with was excessive ( well, Bavauto’s ), I didn’t need oil, transmission nor rear diff change at 45k kms. I was just following the schedule to double up factory recommendations, guess they are really backed up.

A one gallon bottle of engine coolant fits perfectly next to the spare in my XJ8. I’m fairly certain that’s by design.

BMW Recommends CASTROL because it fits in the trunk cubby we built.
In the E46 there are little form-fit cutouts under the trunk floor for a spare coolant expansion tank, water pump, radiator hoses, and thermostat housing. Probably more important than a spare tire.
