Kinja'd!!!

On the left are my rear tires, on the right are my front tires. All four tires are the same age with the same milage, 3 years, 30,000 miles. My 1er doesn’t have an LSD so I haven’t been doing burnouts, drifts, nor donuts, as the one wheel peel is just simply embarrassing. I always keep them at the correct factory recommended pressures The tires haven’t been rotated as the rears are wider than the fronts. So why, may I ask, is there such a large difference between the tires in wear?

its because you are accelerating/ moving more then you are stopping...

think about it. even when moving at a contant speed, the car is fighting drag yes? somthing has to push though that drag...RWD = rear tires

Does your car have lane assist? My BMW mechanic tells me it causes rear brake and tire wear

Unless you’re getting really hot through the corners, in regular driving mostly all the front wheels do in a RWD car is roll along under the car in a reasonably straight line. And then gentle decelerations, especially so if you’re using the engine to decelerate they won’t be very affected by deceleration. On the other hand, how much time do you spend on the throttle, asking the tires to push the car forwards? One of the main reasons it’s important to include all four tires in a rotation is that driven wheels tend to wear faster. Obviously it makes it more annoying to rotate when you’ve got different sizes and directional tires that’ll need swapped around on the wheel to rotate them to the other side.

You may not spin up the tires but since you’re here I’m sure you accelerate enthusiastically on a regular enough basis. Do you drive mostly straight roads? If so those front tires have lived a very easy life and the rears have worn normally. Either enjoy the long life of the fronts and buy another set for the back or switch to a square setup so you can rotate all four.

I like the pilot a/s3 you’ve got, I’ll probably buy another set for my mazda3 when I’m done with mine.

How often did you rotate them?

Drive wheels always wear faster.

Isn’t it normal for the drive wheels’ tires to wear faster? Front tires wear faster on FWD cars, and the rear tires wear faster on RWD cars.

And many RWD cars have staggered setups that prevent rotation just like you said. Only a couple FWD cars do this, and on those cars you probably get the same thing with the front tires.

Then I got nothing my 5er doesn’t have it either but chews through rears like that.

BMW puts a very aggressive camber on the rear of their cars. My wife burns through tear tires on her X1 just driving to work and back. My dad does the same on his M235i. You can add less negative camber but is won’t sit as steady at high speeds. Te owner of a tire shop near me owns a 1M and that’s what he told me when Inasked him about BMW rear tire wear.

That’s not something I would have ever thought about but it makes perfect sense. Irrelevant to me, but interesting anyway!

Had the same thing happen to my 1er, front tires good and back tires worn out. I think it has something to do with it being RWD. My M3 eats rear tires, but then that’s because it’s like you want to powerslide those corner? No? Too bad, were doing it anyways.

Apparently the rears are wider than the fronts, so he can’t. If the wheels are the same size, my solution would be wider fronts to match the rears and rotate regularly.

My Mazda 3 does the same thing reversed - but I know exactly why the fronts wear much worse and it ain’t got nothing to do with camber or lane assist... (late brake! hot out!)

The tires haven’t been rotated as the rears are wider than the fronts

D’oh. I feel like an idiot. Thanks.

RWD?
My 911 goes through rears twice as fast as the fronts.

Same thing with my old 335i. Pilot super sports lasted 20k if that.

One of BMW’s handling secrets is aggressive rear alignment for a street car. -2 camber and +.25 toe in will do that, whereas the fronts run half the camber and just a small amount of toe in to induce understeer.

I used to be pretty heavily involved in tires, I was a national sales trainer for a large chain of full service repair shops, and before that I worked at the same chain as a service manager. Not to toot my own horn, just wanted to lay out some credentials...

So, this is a very common issue with staggered fitments (and the reason most, if not all manufacturers don’t honor the mileage guarantee for staggered fitments), and the root cause, in my experience, is two fold. First, your drive tires will always wear faster, which is why regular rotations are so important. On staggered fitments this isn’t an option. Second root cause is that vehicles with staggered fitment tend to be RWD performance oriented vehicles (sports cars, and the like) and these cars tend to have aggressive alignment specs, especially in the rear where traction is so important. There’s other suspension geometry settings that can affect the load on the rear tires and increase rear tire wear, but I’d need to know more about the vehicle first.

If you want to provide a bit more insight, or a private way to contact you I’d be glad to put you in touch with a Michelin engineer that I still talk to, he can provide more insight. But, what you’re going to find that is that he may be able to provide more insight, but ultimately the tires wearing out prematurely is not the fault of the tires but more related to your vehicle. Especially considering these are Michelin tires, we’re talking about a company that has a vertically integrated manufacturing process (they own everything from the rubber trees down) so they can ensure consistency and avoid supplier issues. But even if these were some cheapo private label Chinese tires I’d be confident in saying that the uneven wear is still not due to the tires. If you could rotate the tires, it would go a long way to helping even wear front to rear, but such is life with staggered fitments.
