Hi Oppo!

I’ve noticed (it’s hard not to) an issue with my Accent for the last month or two, but have been lazy and have yet to do anything about it. Basically, at random at normal speeds, when braking to a stop (especially), I can hear a grinding/graunching noise coming from my front left wheel. Now, it’s not just a grinding, but a PULSING grinding (i.e. per wheel rotation, so i.e. it slows down as the car slows down).

It does not happen all the time and can sometimes be gone for days or a week where everything sounds and works fine (i.e. no feel of it through the pedal).

It seems especially worse when braking hard from a faster speed and, after such maneuvers, the sound can actually continue when I am OFF the brakes as I re-accelerate (though it will quickly go away again until I am back on the brakes).

So, what say you Oppo...? The brakes seem to WORK just fine, but I can feel it through the pedal. No vibrations in the steering wheel when braking though, so I don’t think the rotor is warped....? Maybe a loose brake pad...?

Have to take it in for a service in the coming weeks (overdue by 2000km on my oil change right now...just haven’t had time!) for an oil change and to get two slight clunks on the left side checked that seem to be coming from the suspension...hoping worn bushings, but those small clunks seem completely unrelated to the grinding noise issue!

Thanks in advance! :)

maybe a suspect wheel bearing?

I’d still put money on warped rotor, they don’t always vibrate the wheel.

Sticking caliper?

Dying valve in the ABS pump causing erratic caliper operation? (Unlikely, I’d expect a MIL).

Have you pulled the wheel off to check for debris? I had a stick get pinned through the dust shield and suspension that would only hit the rotor when cornering 1/2 turn to the right or more. Atrocious noise, couldn’t find it until the car was on a lift at work.

Funny, when I read your posts, I don’t -hear- an Accent ...

but my money is on a rusty piston/sticking brake caliper

Could also be rotors that are slightly warped and get worse as they heat up and expand. Also one caliper may have lost a bolt and is loose - rubbing against the wheel.

Ah, yes...could be....didn’t think of that until you and a friend just suggested it a few minutes ago!

Would that explain the random coming and going though? There are times it brakes 100% perfectly fine as in no odd pedal feel, no noises at all...?

HAHAHA....ABS, that’s a good one. :P I have a stripper, base model 2009 Accent, ABS was not part of the feature list! :D

Haven’t taken the wheel off....don’t THINK it would be debris as it randomly seems to come and go...?

Ha. Ha. You are a comedian :P

Didn’t think of the sticking caliper, but that would make sense as to why it can come and go...

Good point on the heat expansion...that would explain why it seems to get worse under hard braking....?

Possibly. When the rotor heats up it could exaggerate the warp.

I bet it’s a bad caliper.

Stuck caliper? Had it happen on a Jeep. The inside brake surface was completely gone to the vent veins by the time I got it to the shop.

How how much does a caliper replacement cost, dare I ask? :(

On my old Jeep the caliper was like $30 lol. I had the shop do it and it was something like $150 for the caliper, pads, and bleeding the brakes. Not bad at all.

Well, I have a Hyundai Accent, so it’s not exactly an uncommon and complicated car....here’s hoping the price doesn’t kill me!

It’s about $65 at autozone. 2010 Accent Front.
