I think so. I’m considering trading my Mini for a Camaro SS 1LE. Because track car, that’s why. Should I do it?

If you can afford the extra gas, insurance and payments then I don’t see why not. The car isn’t that unpractical. It has a trunk and a roof. Hell it might even be roomier than the mini.

No and yes. The Mini doesn’t have enough cylinders

Well yes of course. That 1le is a performance bargain and I’m a Mustang guy.

You should get a used 1ss 6th gen and do some basic suspension work. Way cheaper and will still feel like a rocket compared to your mini. An ATS-V would be a great choice too since they apparently feel lighter.

First, do you currently do trackdays? If no, a high powered and heavy muscle car is a bad idea for a first track car.

If you already regularly go to the track you already know that you have to be willing to write off anything you bring to the track and a new Camaro isn’t exactly cheap. You also already know that high horsepower and heavy cars chew through consumables at an astonishing rate. Heavier cars go through tires and brakes at an alarming rate and those parts have to be bigger and are more expensive than the same parts for a smaller car.

There are great reasons why dedicated track cars are older, lighter, lower horsepower vehicles.

I went through 4 sets of tires last year, if I had a Camaro instead of a BRZ I would have had to spend more than twice as much on tires alone (tires are usually the biggest cost at the track unless you buy some armco). I know a number of guys who have a blast tracking their Minis (even a couple with the 3 cylinder slow mobile), and they can fit a second set of track tires in the back of the Mini.

Spend the money on seat time instead.

As someone who strictly provides stupid automotive advice, the answer will always be F56 Cooper S or Cooper S JCW. As stupid as it sounds, I’d rather have either than any Camaro. Or Chevrolet in general. Sure they’re expensive, but you usually don’t buy a Mini because it’s great value for money, you buy it because you want it. The new Cooper S and JCW are absolute rockets. I’d check one of those out if I were you.

If you really like the Camaro, though, I’d say go for it if you like it. The new Camaro and Mustang are both extremely appealing to me. Especially the Mustang.

I’ve already done track days in my Audi S4, BMW Z4, and the Mini for the last three years (In other words, leavemealoneiknowwhatimdoing blipshift shirts are applicable:) ). The Audi gets most of the seat time, but that’s because it’s already been beat to death (on R compounds, no less). It also has a stripped interior and is slated to get bars and seats (needs moar harness).

The BMW has gone through about 3 sets of Michelin PSSes on track. I don’t feel a need to do much more with it. It’s good for what it is, and it’s a bit less threatening to practice adjusting the car’s trajectory with the throttle.

I’m also in a position that I can be choosy with what tracks I take cars to (e.g. I won’t take a brand new Camaro to Road Atlanta, especially with the camber change in T2 uphill, and T12...)

So yeah, I already spend a couple thousand dollars a year on seat time, and have done so for a few years.

Not saying that your advice isn’t good advice (because it actually is, and is what I have counseled true novice drivers with before), but that it has limited applicability the more seat time that you have under your belt.

I don’t like the looks on the Mustang, and I’m not buying a GT350, so unfortunately for Blue Oval Land, the Bowtie guys have a better bang for the buck right now.

You fall into the go for it category then.

You’ll be the fastest guy in a Camaro (I’ve only ever seen one fast Camaro, don’t know why) and have a legitimate shot at being the fastest guy at the track. Tires will suck, but you’ve got the cash (I’m jealous).

The SS 1LE is a monster, I’d personally probably go with a slightly used Corvette but that’s just down to personal preference since the new Camaro is on such a good chasis.

You’re living the dream.

I also have to leave something to move up to. :)

We’ve had a few ATSes out at AMP at one of our events. The buzz is that the Alpha platform is very well sorted out and is even more solid than the Mustang.

The fact that GM gives you a power boost and more capability than the Mustang GT for the same money (about $46K) kind of seals this one for the bowtie boys.

If it weren’t for well-nurtured spite toward all things VAG at this point, you could buy a crate engine and stick it in the Audi instead. Of course, small jobs hauling can now be handled by the truck, but the Mini *is* both more practical and less practical than a Camaro at the same time. Which is hard.

Also, Camaros are like pillboxes that can only accommodate nerf guns. Solid, but hard to do anything but taunt the enemy from.
